Cris Collinsworth had the perfect response to 49ers' goal-line fumble
What a disappointing season for the San Francisco 49ers.
Considering the Niners represented the NFC in Super Bowl LVIII just 10 months ago and took the eventual Super Bowl-champion Kansas City Chiefs to overtime in the big game, it's not crazy that Niners fans expected more from this team.
Unfortunately, this just hasn't been San Francisco's year.
Injuries have certainly played a factor, but that's not the only thing off with this group. The team just isn't the same vicious force it was a season ago, and that was proven even more true with a blowout loss in Buffalo on Sunday Night Football in Week 13, dropping the Niners to 5-7.
The game didn't have to end in blowout fashion, however. The Niners actually were moving the ball decently in the first half but only had three points to show for it and trailed 21-3 at halftime. Coming out of the half, the 49ers offense moved down the field with ease on their first drive, but unfortunately, bad luck caught up to them once again.
On 1st-and-goal from the Bills' 4-yard-line, fullback Kyle Juszczyk fumbled the ball and the Bills recovered.
There went the 49ers' opportunity to get back in the game and try to salvage their season.
NBC color commentator and former NFL wide receiver Cris Collinsworth didn't hold back with his thoughts on the fumble, noting, "That is the 49ers' season right there."
Cris Collinsworth says goal-line fumble sums up 49ers' 2024 season
Say what you want about Collinsworth's commentary but he's 100-percent right here with these comments. This fumble did truly sum up how the Niners' season has gone so far. Once it feels like they're back in the thick of things, they choke the opportunity away.
The 49ers had a chance to sit at 6-6 with a win and would have been one game out of first place in the lackluster NFC West. With their loss, they're now two games out of first place, and their playoff chances have dipped to 9 percent.
The season isn't necessarily over but it feels over. This team is not playing postseason-caliber ball right now, so maybe it's best if they just try their best to get through the rest of the season without any more major injuries and aim to be better in 2025.
