Cris Collinsworth admits Brock Purdy faces tougher scrutiny than Patrick Mahomes

What Purdy did was Mahomes-like.

The San Francisco 49ers won one of the most epic games of the season on Sunday night against the Chicago Bears, thanks in large part to an incredible performance from quarterback Brock Purdy.

One play in particular earned Purdy a Patrick Mahomes comparison.

Color commentator Cris Collinsworth was calling the game for NBC, and in the third quarter when Purdy made an unreal play dodging and juking defenders before delivering a pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk in the end zone, the analyst revealed the double standard between Purdy and Mahomes:

"I mean, if this were Patrick Mahomes we'd be screaming, 'Oh! Patrick Mahomes,'" Collinsworth admitted. "I know I would be screaming."

This subtle admission shows how Mahomes and Purdy are held to a different standard, or at the very least, people react to them differently when they perform well. Typically, when Mahomes has done incredible things in his career, people just shake their heads and go, "Mahomes being Mahomes."

And it's true. The 49ers have seen the guy's magic up close and personal in not one, but two heartbreaking Super Bowl losses. No one is more familiar with his ability to do things other quarterbacks simply cannot do than Niners fans.

Yet, typically when Purdy does something incredible, several people explain it away by saying he is playing in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense or give more credit to the skill players around him as if Mahomes doesn't have Andy Reid calling plays or has been devoid of quality players around him.

However, the narrative that Purdy is just a system quarterback seems to be melting with each passing week. He has delivered two straight huge performances in prime time and is heating up at the perfect time for San Francisco.

He just led the offense to 42 points against a solid Chicago Bears defense, scoring five touchdowns of his own, three through the air and two on the ground. He did it without both tight end George Kittle and left tackle Trent Williams, two guys headed to Canton someday. Purdy also did it after throwing a pick-six on his first throw of the game.

He is doing the kind of things Mahomes has done in his career, and Collinsworth is right that people would be losing their minds if Mahomes did the same thing.

Perhaps he has earned that reaction, but Purdy is quickly earning that very same respect with each game he plays this season.
