It was painfully obvious why the San Francisco 49ers executed a trade with the Washington Commanders for running back Brian Robinson Jr. late last offseason. At that point, the Niners' tailback room was banged up. And despite having All-Pro Christian McCaffrey back in the fold (and fully healthy) depth was sorely needed.
McCaffrey returned to his workhorse duties over the course of 2025, which ultimately meant the one-two combo of him and Robinson never truly developed as some fans had hoped.
That said, Robinson still managed to carve out a niche role behind McCaffrey and on special teams, subsequently rushing for 400 yards and two touchdowns while adding 378 yards on 13 kick returns.
At the outset of the new league year, though, it became pretty clear San Francisco had little interest retaining the 27 year old former third-round draft choice.
It won't have the chance to re-sign him now.
Brian Robinson is reportedly off to the Falcons in free agency
According to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, Robinson is inking a free-agent deal to join the Atlanta Falcons where he'll team up with another rushing superstar, Bijan Robinson:
Sources: The #Falcons are expected to sign former #49ers RB Brian Robinson Jr., per sources.

It sounds as if it'll be a similar RB2 role, and it'll be interesting to see if Atlanta utilizes the former Robinson's talents a bit more than how head coach Kyle Shanahan used him during his one-year stint in the Bay Area.
As for the 49ers, who still have to consider insurance plans behind the 29-year-old McCaffrey, they put then-rookie Jordan James into action late in the postseason last January but also effectively iced out second-year pro Isaac Guerendo from the offensive depth chart.
Perhaps Robinson's departure is the best news for Guerendo's roster chances, although both he and Patrick Taylor Jr. are certainly on the fringes of the roster heading deeper into the offseason.
And if the Niners add another rusher during or after April's NFL Draft, it'd spell more danger for Guerendo.
That's not Robinson's problem anymore, though.
