While it certainly didn't impact them directly, the San Francisco 49ers had to be keenly aware of just how badly things had turned for their former offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, during the final year of his head-coaching tenure with the Miami Dolphins in 2025.
That ultimately led to McDaniel's firing, a logical conclusion after things appeared to be so toxic after a promising start over the previous two years.
There was no shortage of negative reports stemming from South Beach, much of which was directed at McDaniel no longer being in true control over his roster.
But, as bad as things may have seemed, one of McDaniel's former stars in Miami, running back Raheem Mostert, whom Niners fans know awfully well, didn't hesitate to call out just how sour the relationship had gotten between coach and players.
Raheem Mostert's Dolphins report casts a horrible shadow on Mike McDaniel
Speaking on the 4th and South Podcast, Mostert went into all kinds of detail about McDaniel's tenure in Miami, and the comments didn't exactly paint the coach in a positive light.
First, there were accusations about a lack of respect, and it seemed to go both ways. McDaniel apparently didn't respect his players, including Mostert, who earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2023 for his 18-touchdown campaign.
But that's not all.
"There were no boundaries," Mostert added. "If you’ve got guys that are cussing coaches out on the sideline, it’s over with. But not just one time, like numerous times, or even putting their hands on a coach. Come on, that’s different."
Physical altercations now? That's bad. Awfully bad.
Now, Mostert didn't go into detail and say he was involved in such altercations, and it's important to know his path originally crossed McDaniel's back when both were with San Francisco from 2017 through 2021. In fact, when McDaniel was hired as the Dolphins head coach in 2022, Mostert was one of the first free agents who followed him to Miami.
Watching from afar, it's certainly sour for 49ers fans to see two former colleagues who helped the Niners offense explode during those late 2010s and early 2020s suddenly at odds, but that appears to be the reality of what happened when they were together with the Dolphins.
And it certainly isn't a good look, pretty much indicating it was best for all parties to move on from each other.
