A fan-favorite, Talanoa Hufanga's days with the 49ers have officially come to a close after he found a new home via NFL free agency.
The San Francisco 49ers have lost a key part of their defense from the last four years, safety Talanoa Hufanga.
In the opening wave of free agency, the Denver Broncos inked the 2022 first-team All-Pro to a new contract, denying the Niners a chance to retain their 2021 day-three NFL Draft pick.
News of the transaction was first reported by Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz:

Hufanga, a fifth-round pick out of Oregon, made a memorable impact with the Niners during his four-year tenure, which included one of the more memorable plays in postseason history: the scooped-up blocked punt for a touchdown in the snow-covered win over the Green Bay Packers in January of 2022:
Chills.
Despite his shortcomings, the fan-favorite defensive back nevertheless cemented himself as a playmaker, rising to the starting ranks in 2022 and earning first-team All-Pro honors in the process.
Unfortunately, injuries curtailed his 2023 campaign, one in which he suffered a torn ACL halfway through the season that prompted San Francisco to seek replacements. Additional injuries in 2024, all of which led to Hufanga appearing in just seven games, didn't help matters much either.
How 49ers make up for Talanoa Hufanga's departure
A true in-the-box safety, the 49ers hope second-year pro Malik Mustapha can fill the void on the strong side of the formation, using his own hard-hitting ways that were on full display over the course of 2024.
The Niners also boast third-year safety Ji'Ayir Brown, who impressed in Hufanga's stead in 2023 but regressed notably last season to the point of being benched.
A bounce-back effort from Brown would be welcomed, but it wouldn't be surprising if San Francisco turned to this year's draft to find a rangy, playmaking defensive back who can be plugged into coordinator Robert Saleh's defense right away.
As for Hufanga, he'll remain a fan-favorite, if for no other reason than that memorable special teams touchdown scored against Green Bay.
