The regular season is coming up soon for the San Francisco 49ers, and, while the starters got some action last week in the preseason contest with the Los Angeles Chargers, they likely won’t see much playing time, if any, in the team’s final preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
That means practice is where the starters are going to get their last reps in before heading to Australia, and quarterback Brock Purdy showed a side to himself that may shock some fans in a recent practice against linebacker Fred Warner.
We know that Warner can be an absolute pest in practice. He’s not afraid to hit guys and talk some smack.
Apparently, that’s exactly what he was doing during practice on Sunday. He broke up a pass from Purdy and then taunted him for it, but Purdy seemed to get the last laugh.
Purdy hit Deebo Samuel for a completion as Warner dove to try to break it up, and apparently, the baby-faced signal-caller had some choice words for Warner. It was all in good fun, though, as they were laughing about it later in practice, but we don’t see that side of Purdy all that often.
Usually, he is the eminently humble farm boy at the podium talking about how he has to get better and always accepting blame if the team comes up short. But when he gets on the field, even in practice, that competitive fire can show itself in surprising ways.
Sometimes it will manifest itself in a corny dance or some wild celebration, but usually, Purdy stays pretty calm and collected out there, a trait that Joe Montana says he loves in Purdy.
Montana himself was always calm and collected out on the field (he was “Joe Cool,” after all), but he could get fiery on occasion. Niners fans know all about the choice words he had for Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Ed “Too Tall” Jones after hitting Dwight Clark for “The Catch” to advance to the Super Bowl back in 1982.
Purdy doesn’t seem like the type to swear or yell at anyone, but the competitive juices of the gridiron can bring out a different side in anyone. One has to love Warner and Purdy going at it like this because it’s only going to make them both better going into a season where the 49ers will need them both on their game if they are to have any chance at a Super Bowl.
