The 2026 NFL season cannot get here soon enough, and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy just got fans amped up with his comments on what the team is capable of.
Speaking at the Dwight Clark Legacy Series event, Purdy said the following:
“Obviously, we have what it takes to go all the way and win it.”
Yes, fans should absolutely love that mentality.
Going into the 2025 season, it was not clear what to expect from the San Francisco 49ers. Yes, the team had a very easy schedule on paper but also several key players in the preceding offseason.
It was unclear whether the Niners would be a true contender or would have to just fight to sneak into the playoffs. Even head coach Kyle Shanahan had to calibrate his message to the team going into 2025. He knew the “Super Bowl or bust” mentality the 49ers had in prior seasons was not going to be appropriate.
Yet, despite all of the injuries and all of the adversity the 49ers went 12-5, won a playoff game, and ended up having a great season. They proved they are still a team capable of contention after a rough 2024 campaign, and now they head into 2026 reloaded and looking for more.
While roster moves before the 2025 season seemed more like a team going through a quasi-rebuild, the Niners sent a very clear message about what their goals are this upcoming season with their offseason moves.
Signing future Hall of Fame wide receiver Mike Evans, bringing back beloved linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and trading for defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa were all moves made by a team looking to win now.
Purdy recognizes that, and it would not be a surprise if Shanahan sets a different tone this season. Maybe it won’t be "Super Bowl or bust," but it may be more an affirmation that if the Niners play up to their potential, there’s no reason they can’t be one of the best teams in the NFL.
For decades, the 49ers have been chasing that elusive sixth Super Bowl. While it will not be easy for them to accomplish that goal, especially since arguably the two best teams in the NFC are in their division, Purdy’s comments make it clear that San Francisco knows how good it can be.
Now it will just come down to injuries and whether they can play well consistently.
