Is there a player in the NFL right now performing at a higher level than San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy?
Even with a depleted group of wide receivers, Purdy is playing near-perfect football so far this season. He has led his team to a 3-0 start and doesn't show any signs of slowing down. The former Mr. Irrelevant has become one of the most relevant players in the league.
Though there is still a lot of football left to be played this season, Purdy has to be the early favorite to win the MVP award. His production is impossible to deny.

Purdy is averaging 0.61 EPA per play this season, leading the league by a wide margin. By comparison, no quarterback has averaged more than 0.27 EPA per play across a whole season in the last four years. The next-highest mark this season is 0.44.
He also leads all qualifying quarterbacks this year in success rate, total passing EPA, and passing touchdowns. He's the only quarterback with more than 50 dropbacks who still hasn't been sacked.
Heading into Week 3, Purdy and Josh Allen appeared to be neck-and-neck in the MVP race. But after Allen's three-turnover performance against a struggling Los Angeles Chargers squad, he has taken a major step backward in the fight for the award.
Purdy, on the other hand, was perfect once again. He threw four touchdown passes and averaged 11 yards per attempt in San Francisco's win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Purdy is operating with more anticipation, more command, more creativity than he has at any other point in his career. Even as his receivers drop like flies around him, he is consistently moving the ball
Yes, Kyle Shanahan's system helps support Purdy. He can lean on Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle when he needs a big play, and his offensive line has done an admirable job of protecting him. But the talent around him shouldn't diminish how effective he has been so far this season.
Can he sustain this level of play for the rest of the season? No, probably not. But he doesn't need to be perfect to win the award.
As long as he continues to be efficient and limit mistakes, and the Niners maintain their status as one of the best teams in the NFL, Purdy should cruise to his first MVP.
