In something of a surprise shocker, one of the San Francisco 49ers' clutch players from their Week 1 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, quarterback Brock Purdy, showed up on the Monday injury report with both shoulder and toe injuries.

Purdy didn't appear to have any injuries immediately after the game, yet head coach Kyle Shanahan hinted the quarterback's availability for Week 2's road contest against the New Orleans Saints could be in doubt.

On Wednesday, Shanahan delivered news that's even more concerning.

Speaking to reporters and going over the Niners' Week 2 injury report for the upcoming week of practice, the head coach revealed Purdy not only wouldn't practice on Wednesday but there was also a dim chance of him being able to suit up in NOLA.

"I think it's a long shot," Shanahan said when asked if Purdy could play against New Orleans.

The coach also revealed Purdy's toe was indeed stepped on, taking place on a scramble.

While not ruling it out entirely, and also admitting the toe was worse than the non-throwing shoulder, Shanahan more or less suggested it'd be backup quarterback Mac Jones' chance to take hold of the game if Purdy can't quite go.

Mac Jones suddenly thrust into spotlight amid Brock Purdy injury

Shanahan was complimentary of Jones, one of San Francisco's few high-profile offseason free-agent pickups last spring, who'll now be given a potential first shot with the 49ers in a meaningful contest.

Jones, who was viewed as a potential 49ers first-round target back in the 2021 NFL Draft, is likely using his newfound tenure under Shanahan to resurrect what has otherwise been a floundering career that saw stints with both the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Nowhere near as mobile as Purdy, Jones nevertheless is seen as a tailored fit for Shanahan's passing system. While fans caught a glimpse of the backup QB's efforts during preseason action, the play calling in those situations was awfully vanilla, meaning Week 2 could potentially open the door on whether or not the Niners made the right choice to oboard him.

Assuming Purdy can't go, of course, which seems to be the case.
