Bloodied Mac Jones' precision leads 49ers to dissect Giants defense with ease

Way to bounce back.

Quarterback Mac Jones and the San Francisco 49ers knew they'd be in for a bit of a respite in Week 9 after losing a week ago to a tough Houston Texans defense.

The New York Giants' own defense, after all, entered Sunday's contest giving up the third-most yards in the league (3,059) and was the absolute worst defending the run, giving up an average of 5.7 yards per carry.

That figured to help running back Christian McCaffrey back into form after the previous week's struggles, which in turn, opened up more opportunities for Jones to pick apart a banged-up G-Men secondary.

And the No. 2 quarterback had two touchdown passes against zero incompletes by the time the first half was in the books.

Jones ultimately finished with 235 pass yards and two touchdowns in the Niners' 34-24 win over New York, but the signature moment might have been when the signal-caller was smacked in the face, resulting in a bloody nose that'll only add to his aura in support of the still-injured starter, Brock Purdy:

Warrior.

Jones needed a bounce-back performance after last week's struggles in Houston. And while Purdy is expected to return in the very near future, San Francisco is able to put back its faith in the former's ability to plug the gap in the interim.

Mac Jones owes a 'thank you' to 49ers run game for getting back on track

McCaffrey and the 49ers took full advantage of Giants coordinator Shane Bowen's shoddy run defense, particularly early on and then late to ice the game, which unquestionably made life easier for Jones through the air.

With the Niners run game averaging 4.1 yards per carry, Jones and head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't have the need to execute drop-backs 30-plus times.

And when Jones did have to deliver a pass, completing 19 of his 24 attempts certainly did the trick.

Things would have been much tougher if McCaffrey and second-string running back Brian Robinson hadn't churned out a combined 159 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, yet the duo ensured Jones' life would be that much easier.

But they did, and Jones took full advantage as a result.
