The San Francisco 49ers blew yet another game this season with their Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
While things look bleak, fans are overreacting in ways that are somewhat preditable. Let's break down these overreactions.
This loss drops the Niners to a record of 5-5 and makes their playoff chances look much slimmer.
Still, there has been a lot of hyperbole surrounding the team.
Kyle Shanahan should be fired
Many fans are calling for head coach Kyle Shanahan's head.
Is Shanahan a perfect coach? No. Is he a great coach? I would argue no. Is he a very good football coach? Undoubtedly.
Sometimes, we as Niners fans get so spoiled that we forget how good we really have it. Shanahan is one of the most gifted offensive minds in the NFL, and he and general manager John Lynch have built a powerhouse in the NFC.
Does his arrogance sometimes blind him? Yes. Does he have a penchant for blowing leads? Most definitely. But he is still leaps and bounds ahead of whatever coach you could possibly replace him with outside of Bill Belichick.
Plus, the Niners are committed to him through 2027, so him getting fired is not happening, folks, nor should it.
Brock Purdy is a scrub
Quarterback Brock Purdy did not have his best game against the Hawks. It was not a disaster, but he did not have his best stuff and it cost the team. He is not the only one to blame, though, and there is plenty of blame to go around on the offense. But he would be the first one to tell you he should have been better.
The missed throw to wide receiver Deebo Samuel late in the fourth quarter, which in all likelihood would have sealed the game, was his most egregious error. But the fact that some are saying Purdy is no good and the Niners should not keep him after this year is just silly.
Purdy is a top-10 quarterback in the NFL. Those guys do not just grow on trees. He still has room for improvement and is unquestionably the guy for San Francisco behind center going forward.
Niners need to rebuild
What? A rebuild? Are you joking?
No, some fans actually want to tear down everything Shanahan and Lynch have built over the last seven years. The Niners do indeed have an aging corps of players. Perhaps this offseason, they trade away Samuel in an effort to save money and get younger. There are moves like that which would not be a wholesale rebuild but would be more of a retooling as the Niners try to remain competitive.
But the notion that the 49ers should start from scratch is laughable. Remember how fun the team was to watch in 2016 and the first half of 2017?
Yeah, me neither.
It is understandable for fan passions to run high after such a disappointing season thus far. But these overreactions are just a little bit too much and should be called out as such.
