The San Francisco 49ers (and the rest of the NFC West, for that matter) have to be stressed as they wait in limbo for whatever developments come from future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald's unretirement rumors.
Donald, who regularly tormented the Niners as a longtime member of the Los Angeles Rams, hasn't played since 2023, but L.A.'s blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, defensive end Myles Garrett, might've stoked a fire in Donald to return to the ranks in a quest for another Super Bowl ring.
Indeed, there've been plenty of rumors about Donald doing just that, particularly one floated around by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Los Angeles boasting a defensive front that consists of Donald, Garrett and the underrated Byron Young is terrifying enough, and should Donald unretire, it'd wholly tip the balance of power in the uber-competitive NFC West.
And it appears as if Donald is fully taking to the idea.
Aaron Donald stokes the fire surrounding his unretirement rumor mill
On an Instagram post by Clutch Points, one speculating what a Garrett-Donald tandem would look like, the perennial All-Pro liked the post and even added "eyes" emojies, as can be seen below:

Now, just because Donald clicked a couple of buttons from his Instagram account when he viewed the post doesn't automatically translate to his unretirement being inevitable.
But it does lend credence to the idea he's coming back.
Donald has kept himself in shape, and judging by those efforts alone, it wouldn't take long for the 35 year old to reacclimate himself to the rigors of the NFL. Should he return, it could be an imminent decision. Or he may opt to wait later into the regular season, observing how things are going for his already-stacked Rams team, opting to join for a late Super Bowl push as a quasi-reinforcement.
Either way, it'll keep rivals like San Francisco in limbo on a weekly basis until some sort of concrete announcement is made.
From the 49ers' perspective, they'd certainly hope Donald eventually responds with an "I'm fully retired" announcement instead of stoking the fire and keeping the rest of the NFC West on edge.
