The San Francisco 49ers made a statement with their win Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams. Everything seemed to be clicking on the international stage, and no one appeared to be more comfortable than quarterback Brock Purdy.
The signal caller threw three touchdowns after starting the game off with an early interception. However, it was more than just an impressive performance. He used the game to make a clear statement to those who have doubted him.
Since Purdy burst onto the scene, critics have been trying to figure out the answer to one question: is the Niners QB elite, or is he reliant on Kyle Shanahan's masterful play calling? NFL pundits have often dismissed Brock's success because of his ideal situation, attributing his abilities to the man holding the play sheet. On Thursday, though, Purdy emphatically put those concerns to bed.
Brock Purdy's Week 1 dominance had nothing to do with Kyle Shanahan
After throwing an early pick, it would've been easy for Purdy to fold under pressure. In previous years, he has pressed after rough starts, which has caused him to be turnover-prone when things don't go his way.
Thursday had all the makings of a similar affair, but Purdy immediately righted the ship - not because Shanahan called the right plays, but because the quarterback made all the right decisions. In fact, the former Iowa man played better when the reins were taken off after the first quarter.
His first touchdown was a 39-yard bomb to Demarcus Robinson, whom Purdy found streaking down the middle. His second score was an early demonstration of the chemistry he has already developed with new wideout Mike Evans. His third and arguably most impressive touchdown was a 15-yard endzone pass to Deebo Samuel, in which he had to go through multiple reads on the left side of the field before rolling out the complete opposite direction.
He also terrorized Los Angeles on the ground, rushing for 29 timely yards, including an 18-yard dash and a short-yardage run for a first down, where he played mind games with nearby defenders.
Purdy's ability to go off-script completely alters 49ers' Super Bowl chances
In short, Purdy showed an ability to go off script that he hadn't previously. It's a rare skill possessed by only the NFL's elite QBs. Fearless gunslingers like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow are known for their proclivity to turn chaos into magic, which is why they are held in such high esteem.
The best quarterbacks have a hint of unpredictability. Mahomes, for instance, is widely known for his "no look" pass. While he may not have invented it, he has come extremely close to perfecting it. In fact, it was Mahomes who was responsible for spoiling the 49ers' Super Bowl hopes in both 2019 and 2023. In each game, San Francisco took a lead late into the fourth quarter, but both Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo simply didn't have enough playmaking ability to close the door on the comeback king.
But it was Purdy who demonstrated this unpredictability on Thursday, and the Rams clearly had no answer for it. If this is a sign of what's to come, the 49ers could have a higher ceiling than many initially predicted, as Purdy and his newfound spontaneity might just take his team to the Promised Land.
