It sounds awfully hyperbole-ish, but the San Francisco 49ers' upcoming 2026 campaign might entirely hinge upon how healthy veteran linebacker Dre Greenlaw is.
Of course, the Niners are only too familiar with Greenlaw's track record of staying healthy. A torn Achilles during the Super Bowl in February of 2024 all but derailed Greenlaw's subsequent campaign, forcing San Francisco to pivot to other less-desirable options to pair alongside All-Pro Fred Warner. And with Greenlaw's one-year absence with the Denver Broncos last season, coupled with Warner's own injury, the 49ers' linebacking shortages and deficiencies were made that much more paramount.
Back in the fray, and hopefully healthy after appearing in just eight games for Denver in 2025, Greenlaw aims to help revert the Niners defense back to its pinnacle.
Considering just how competitive the NFC West is entering 2026, the 29 year old's availability might be San Francisco's biggest X-factor; a linchpin for the 49ers' playoff aspirations amid what should be a challenging season.
Dre Greenlaw's health might be 49ers' biggest X-factor for 2026
Greenlaw already admitted he wasn't fully healthy last season, saying, "For me, it was like, the fact that I'm not healthy, I don't feel that twitch or that gear that I felt like I need to have."
The Niners can hope the backer is at 100 percent now, and they may need both he and Warner to be at their best, given the replacement-level options behind the two on the depth chart.
After parting ways with linebacker Dee Winters during April's NFL Draft, San Francisco's fallback options aren't exactly at Greenlaw's level. Tatum Bethune is primarily a run-stopping linebacker, while Garrett Wallow and Luke Gifford are special teams aces. Second-year pro Nick Martin might be on the fringes of the roster after disappointing in 2025, and rookie Jaden Dugger has promise but is an unpolished first-year pro.
Meanwhile, rival NFC West offenses like the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams will have no issue picking on Greenlaw's backups, should the veteran miss ample time this upcoming season, and that would easily alter the balance of power within the division, likely putting the 49ers well behind their rivals in the pecking order.
If Greenlaw stays healthy, however, the chances of both L.A. and Seattle accomplishing such diminish significantly.
Now, all the Niners need to do is hope Greenlaw avoids the injury bug this season.
