49ers' training camp finale was all too fitting (and not in a good way)

On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers had their last practice of the preseason, and it went, well, exactly as expected.

That's not to say the status quo has been entirely positive - quite the opposite, actually. While key players like Brock Purdy, De'Zhaun Stribling, and Deebo Samuel have all enjoyed their share of success, a more prominent theme has dominated the preseason, and it threatens to follow the squad into September.

Tuesday's finale saw 23 players absent due to injury. It was a fitting way to end camp, as key contributors on both sides of the ball have consistently been kept out of action due to bumps and bruises. A few of those, namely Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and George Kittle, are highly questionable for Week 1's matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

49ers's training camp ended with more questions than answers

For most teams, training camp helps answer pressing questions regarding rosters, positional battles, and rookie evaluations.

The 49ers' camp, however, looked a bit different. They entered August largely knowing what they already had. The core of the offense was built upon experienced, dependable veterans, with franchise quarterback Brock Purdy still at the helm. The defense was set to return its two leaders, the aforementioned Bosa and Fred Warner, and fans eagerly awaited the coming season.

Instead, those same fans endured a flurry of wild news stories surrounding Brandon Aiyuk's shenanigans, Kyle Shanahan's car crash, and Jed York's nefarious antics. Despite the unexpected drama, one fact remained constant throughout camp: injuries.

Now, fans are questioning whether their beloved Niners will be at full strength come the regular season. It's not often that teams fail to make it to Week 1 before getting severely banged up, but the 49ers have managed to do just that. Rookie wideout De'Zhaun Stribling was once third or fourth on the depth chart. Now, there is a legitimate chance he begins the season as Purdy's primary target.

Questions swirl around San Francisco's defense, specifically the pass rush, and their offense hasn't fared much better. The red and gold could just as likely win 12 games again and be at full strength as they could suffer an injury-plagued campaign where they miss the playoffs. In short, the range of outcomes is alarming.

49ers' tough opening schedule does little to alleviate uncertainties

To be fair, many players showed promise throughout camp. But it was the injuries that stole the show from the first day to the last.

49ers will likely be leaving the month of August with more concerns than they began with. After their last warm-up game this Thursday against the Raiders, the Kyle Shanahan's squad will begin its season in Australia against the current Super Bowl favorites. Unfortunately, it doesn't get much easier from there, as three of their first five games are against teams that won at least one game in last year's postseason.

Whether the 49ers are ready for that challenge is anybody's guess, as training camp did little to provide an answer.
