The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with a wide receiver crisis after a string of unfortunate injuries has ravaged the position. The latest casualty is Mike Evans, the Niners' key acquisition over the offseason, who exited San Francisco's eventual win over the Cardinals with a rib injury.
According to Ian Rapoport, Evans is day-to-day, which is the best possible news. The 49ers have been dealing with all sorts of injuries, and their wide receiver position has not been excluded from that, losing Evans, Demarcus Robinson, De'Zhaun Stribling, and Ricky Pearsall all within the last month or so.
While Evans shouldn't hopefully miss too much time, the Niners could still use some help at the position, given all of the injuries this team has suffered.
One of the more aggressive options on the table for the Niners is Jerry Jeudy, who's currently not providing much for the Browns in Cleveland.
Jerry Jeudy could be just the right weapon for 49ers to bring in
Some might hear that and think, "Well, if he's not doing much there, why would we want him?" I hear that logic, I do, but Jeudy's lack of production is largely in part of the Browns adding young talent at the wide receiver position who are taking targets away from him.
This tracks with what Michael Haney of Dawg Pound Daily said when linking the 49ers with Jeudy.
"He's faded into the background of the offense as rookie wideouts Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion have taken over. If he's not part of Todd Monken's plans moving forward, the Browns may need to consider trading him," Haney wrote. "The Browns shouldn't necessarily be sellers after their 2-1 start, but Jeudy doesn't seem to have a significant role in Monken's offense. He didn't earn a target in Week 3 despite running 26 routes. He currently ranks sixth on the team in targets and is tied with tight end Blake Whiteheart in catches."
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you feel about the potential landing spot), Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot said Cleveland doesn't plan to trade Jeudy. That might be the case, but with Boston and Concepion, plus tight end Harold Fannin proving they can handle the load in the receiving game, if the Browns can get anything for Jeudy, they shouldn't hesitate to relocate him.
The 49ers might have to give up more for Jeudy than they would for a guy like DeAndre Hopkins (who isn't signed anywhere at the moment), but it'd be worth it. Jeudy is durable and has proven that when he's the focal point of an offense, he can be that dude. He was magnificient for the Browns in 2024, tallying over 1,200 yards receiving and scoring four touchdowns.
If the Niners can get that kind of production out of Jeudy, they'd be thrilled. Plus, imagine him, Evans, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey all on the field as options for Brock Purdy.
This San Francisco offense would be darn near unstoppable.
