The last thing the San Francisco 49ers (and the rest of the NFC West, for that matter) wants to see is a one-two defensive line tandem comprised of the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, and a future first-ballot Hall of Famer in Aaron Donald.
Yet that's what the rival Los Angeles Rams may soon have.
Rumors of Donald returning to the ranks after his 2023 retirement exploded after L.A. pulled off the offseason blockbuster trade for Garrett. Understandably, with Los Angeles' Super Bowl window wide open, the chance for Donald to secure yet another ring couldn't be any better.
In the meantime, teams like the Niners have anxiously awaited whether or not Donald is actually considering it, all the while likely hoping some obstacle gets in the way.
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the rest of the NFL world may find out in the very near future.
Aaron Donald's unretirement decision 'could happen in the coming days'
Florio cited a source close to the situation and said the following:
As retired defensive tackle Aaron Donald continues to work his way back into football shape, a decision regarding his potential return could happen in the coming days, per a source with knowledge of the situation.
Donald’s goal is to find out whether he can get back to being Aaron Donald again, the dominant, three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year who has already done more than enough to be a no-brainer first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Donald recently worked out for the Rams during their training camp, and head coach Sean McVay's subsequent comments certainly stoked the rumor-mill fire.
Florio also added a nugget directly at San Francisco, too, considering the two divisional rivals square off for a Week 1 showdown in Melbourne, Australia, and the media personality reported the plan was to have the perennial All-Pro on the field for 30 to 40 snaps.
Needless to say, the 49ers are highly interested in whether or not that comes to fruition.
If it will, and if Florio is right, the Niners (and the rest of the league, for that matter) will find out in a short timeframe.
