49ers should rush to sign these 3 still-available free agents right now

They still have some holes to fill.

The San Francisco 49ers made it through the NFL Draft. One would like to say they made it through unscathed, but that is simply not the case as the Niners have definitely taken some heat for their draft decisions.

There's nothing they can do about it now, though. If John Lynch had a time machine, I doubt he'd use it to go back and draft Omar Cooper Jr. All San Francisco can do is move forward and address the remaining holes on the roster through free agency.

Let's look at three still-available free agents who the Niners should go after.

Trevon Diggs

Obviously, Trevon Diggs is not the same All-Pro cornerback he was earlier in his career. After he tore his ACL in 2023, he has not been the same player since. But that does not mean he is completely washed up at the age of 27.

The Dallas Cowboys let go of him last season, and his numbers the last few years haven't been all that pretty, but he had two interceptions back in 2024. So if he's healthy, there's reason to believe he can be a serviceable cornerback.

Renardo Green is a definite question mark for the 49ers after last season, so why not bring Diggs in to see if he can compete for a job? Nothing like a little competition.

Donovan Wilson

The 49ers decided to not draft a safety even though they got spotty play, at best, from that position last season. Malik Mustapha, Ji'Ayir Brown, and Marques Sigle have all shown flashes of solid play, but none of them seem like guaranteed solutions.

The Niners should bring in veteran Donovan Wilson. He's been a reliable player for Dallas over the years and has played in 15 or more games each of the last four seasons. He had two picks last season and would be a nice veteran presence in the secondary.

Jadeveon Clowney

Just to keep the theme up, the Niners should also think about bringing in Jadeveon Clowney, who had 8.5 sacks for the Cowboys last season. Drafted No. 1 overall by the Houston Texans back in 2014, Clowney is not the same player he once was.

Even though he is prone to injury and has never quite lived up to the lofty expectations placed upon him, he can still get to the quarterback, which is a trait the Niners need badly after finishing last in the NFL in sacks last season.

These players wouldn't solve every problem for San Francisco's defense, but they would add some depth and also come with the added benefit of annoying the heck out of Cowboys fans if they end up having a great season in red and gold.
