While the Los Angeles Rams trading for edge rusher Myles Garrett is certainly bad news for the San Francisco 49ers this season, it may actually end up being a good thing for the Niners in the long run. Some analysts are speculating this huge move could mean head coach Sean McVay will leave the Rams after this season, which would be an absolute gift for San Francisco.
Bomani Jones speculated on his podcast that this move could mean McVay is not planning to stay with the Rams after this year.
“[The Rams] are so all in on this year that the only assumption that I can make is that Sean McVay is outta here after this year… He can’t plan to stay there very long because the bill is going to come due,” Jones said of McVay.

Now, several people in reply to his post pointed out the fact that McVay signed a contract extension back in February and that talk of his retirement is overblown. They have a point, and maybe Jones is a little off when he thinks McVay will be done after this season. But he may be right that McVay is not just going to stick around with the Rams forever.
It seems like LA may be targeting these next two seasons as years when they can go all-in on trying to win. Quarterback Matthew Stafford is signed through 2027, and while Garrett is arguably one of the best players in the NFL, it's questionable how effective he will be after the next few seasons. So it seems the Rams are doing everything in their power to make a run right now.
But what happens after that?
If Stafford plays two more years and then retires, or goes to play somewhere else while the Rams hand the keys to Ty Simpson, is McVay going to want to stick around for that? We all saw how unenthused he appeared to be by Los Angeles' selection of Simpson in the first round of the NFL Draft, so maybe there’s a chance he jumps ship and goes somewhere he thinks he’ll have a better chance to win.
That would be amazing for the 49ers. For as good of a coach as Kyle Shanahan is, McVay has to be considered slightly ahead of him since he has a Super Bowl ring and Shanahan does not.
The two are friends and have had a lot of memorable duels over the years, but something tells me Shanahan wouldn’t mind if his old buddy went to coach for another team. That would certainly make the path to winning the NFC West a bit easier for San Francisco.
Perhaps this is just overblown chatter, and McVay will end up staying with the Rams for years. But given the quarterback situation, and the fact that the Garrett trade is such a win-now move, there may be a ticking clock on McVay’s time with Los Angeles.
