The San Francisco 49ers are going to say goodbye to one diva wide receiver this offseason in Brandon Aiyuk.
Would they be willing to bring in another, though?
The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly entertaining the idea of trading away wide receiver A.J. Brown. Would it make any sense for the Niners to be interested?
On its surface, trading for Brown would not be a terrible idea. San Francisco needs to improve at the wide receiver position this offseason, and adding Brown would give it a true No. 1 option.
Last season with Philadelphia, Brown had 78 catches for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns. It was a little bit of a down season for him by his standards, but Philly's whole offense seemed to struggle in 2025, which is not a shock since the hobbled 49ers defense limited it in a Wild Card victory.
Maybe a fresh start is what Brown needs.
We know how he can be a diva and get into spats with head coach Nick Sirianni, who certainly loves melodrama and is not afraid to antagonize his own players and fanbase.
The two went at it on the sideline during that Wild Card game as Brown had just three catches on seven targets and had two big drops.
The Niners need to add receivers, but they may not be eager to add another pass catcher who could cause issues. Deebo Samuel was a distraction with his negotiations for a contract, although he was usually pretty good about being a team player once the season started.
Aiyuk took the distractions to a completely different level. He made a stink during contract negotiations, and then even when the two sides agreed on an extension, he would cause childish fights over the color of his shorts during practice.
After his injury and refusal to comply with the team on his rehab, the 49ers were so fed up with his antics that they voided his contract.
Who knows if Brown would cause similar situations, but if his time in Philadelphia is any indication, a tenure in the Bay Area would not come without drama.
Then there is a more practical question about whether the two teams would even consider doing business with one another. There is no love lost between the two franchises, so it seems fairly unlikely they could agree on a package to send Brown to San Francisco.
It is an interesting thought exercise, and if one only considered Brown's abilities on the field, maybe a deal would be more appetizing. But the Niners have had to deal with too much wide receiver drama, so a trade feels fairly unlikely.
