49ers reinforce safety depth by signing well-traveled veteran

It's not a splash move, but grabbing Adrian Amos certainly can't hurt the Niners' situation at safety with multiple players on the mend.

The 49ers are signing Adrian Amos, a veteran safety who'll help alleviate the injury attrition at the position.

The NFL world was in for a shock at the conclusion of Week 6, which saw a number of high-profile players on the move.

Namely wide receivers Davante Adams and Amari Cooper being traded to the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, respectively.

Flying well under the radar of those blockbuster deals, the San Francisco 49ers made a move of their own.

Signing veteran safety Adrian Amos, as reported by his representing agency:

Amos, 31 years old, spent his first four seasons at the pro level with the Chicago Bears after they drafted him in Round 5 back in 2015 out of Penn State. He also had plenty of experience squaring off against the Niners, too, after joining the Green Bay Packers in 2019 where he spent four seasons, including two in which San Francisco derailed his postseason hopes.

In 2023, Amos split time with both the New York Jets and Houston Texans before having a brief tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024 but failed to make their 53-man roster.

Why did the 49ers sign Adrian Amos?

The 49ers are hurting at safety. Prior to Week 6, they placed All-Pro defensive back Talanoa Hufanga on injured reserve with a wrist injury, and then they watched rookie safety Malik Mustapha suffer an ankle injury in the Thursday night win over the Seattle Seahawks.

That left the Niners with George Odum and Ji'Ayir Brown as the only logical players who could start.

Shortly after the announcement, reports stated Amos was being signed to San Francisco's practice squad.

With Hufanga poised to miss at least three more weeks while he's shelved on IR, the Amos signing at least gives the 49ers a veteran presence within the secondary and guards against any further injury attrition, should Mustapha miss more time.

Plus, Amos has spent plenty of time on special teams over his nine-year career, suggesting he could help another dire need the Niners possess if he's a gameday promotion.
