While the San Francisco 49ers have several needs to address this offseason, wide receiver and edge rusher are undoubtedly among those at the top of the list.
At receiver, of course, the Niners are finally set to part ways with Brandon Aiyuk after a long ordeal that saw the 2023 second-team All-Pro have all of his guaranteed money for the 2026 season voided after he failed to live up to the terms of his contract during the rehab process for the massive knee injury he suffered midway through the 2024 campaign.
The Niners also have Jauan Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, and Skyy Moore set to hit free agency.
At edge rusher, while Nick Bosa should be ready to roll for Week 1 this September after tearing an ACL in Week 3, 2025 first-round pick Mykel Williams likely won't be, as he suffered the same injury in Week 9, which could keep him out for the first month or two.
Bryce Huff will be back, but Sam Okuayinonu is a restricted free agent, and Yetur Gross-Matos and Clelin Ferrell are both unrestricted free agents. So, with all three potentially out the door, adding some depth on the edge will be crucial.
How much depth the 49ers need to add at these positions when the 2026 NFL Draft rolls around in April will naturally be determined by how the team handles free agency. But for now, a recent mock draft has San Francisco addressing both in the first two rounds.
The Athletic's 2-round mock draft has 49ers taking a WR in Round 1 and an edge rusher in Round 2
Round 1, No. 27 overall: KC Concepcion, WR, Texas A&M
Nick Baumgardner and Scott Dochterman of The Athletic recently put together a two-round mock draft, and with the 49ers' first-round selection at No. 27, they've got them selecting Texas A&M wide receiver KC Concepcion.
"Injuries crushed the 49ers’ offense, but San Francisco also sorely missed that all-purpose threat formerly occupied by Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.
Concepcion was the nation’s most versatile performer and would give Kyle Shanahan a major weapon all over the field, as well as in the return game."
They're undoubtedly right about the all-purpose aspect, as Concepcion, who spent two seasons at North Carolina State before making his way to the Aggies last season, was as versatile as can be in 2025, catching 61 passes for 919 yards and an SEC-best nine touchdowns, while adding 456 yards as a punt returner, averaging 18.2 yards per return.
For his efforts, Concepcion was awarded three different All-SEC selections, earning First-Team honors as a wide receiver, all-purpose player, and return specialist, also winning the coveted Paul Hornung Award.
The 21-year-old has incredible burst off the line and has zero issue creating separation, especially in man coverage. His max speed certainly isn't the best among the wideouts available this year, and he's not the greatest blocker, but he's still worth the first-round selection if he's still there at No. 27.
Round 2, No. 58 overall: R Mason Thomas, EDGE, Oklahoma
At No. 58 overall, Baumgardner and Dochterman have San Francisco selecting Oklahoma edge rusher R Mason Thomas.
After not making much of an impact in his first two seasons with the Sooners, the Florida native earned Second-Team All-SEC honors in 2024 after racking up 35 total pressures, with 16 hurries, 10 hits, and 9.0 sacks in 13 games.
And in 10 games in 2025, Thomas tallied 28 pressures, with 19 hurries, three hits, and 6.0 sacks en route to earning First-Team All-SEC honors. His 90.4 PFF pass-rush grade ranked 24th of 851 qualifying edge rushers this past season, and his 85.3 overall grade ranked 37th.
At 6-foot-2 and 249 pounds, Thomas doesn't have the size some might expect for such a dominant player, but his explosiveness off the line is absolutely incredible, and that can allow him to slip into gaps before opposing offensive linemen have a chance to adjust. Whoever drafts him will undoubtedly attempt to put some weight on him and get him a little stronger, but this is a strong pick if he's there at No. 58.
