Prior to signing Mike Evans and Christian Kirk in the opening wave of free agency, it would have been reasonable to assume the San Francisco 49ers' top priority in April's NFL Draft would be to grab a wide receiver with their first pick, No. 27 overall.
While it's feasible the Niners could still take a wideout in that spot, the win-now Super Bowl window probably dictates a need to grab a prospect who can make an impact right away. Not someone who'd have to marinate on the depth chart for a season or two.
Evans and Kirk changed that need, at least for another year. And while the contract situation with left tackle Trent Williams remains unresolved, San Francisco doesn't appear inclined to move on from the future Hall of Famer.
As is the case at wide receiver, San Francisco might prefer tabling a need for a long-term Williams replacement for another year.
So, what's left?
It's brutally obvious.
49ers' top draft need is a no-brainer after 1st wave of free agency
The 49ers' biggest remaining need heading toward draft month couldn't be clearer: a pass-rusher.
This was a glaring problem entering the offseason after the Niners tallied a league-low 20 sacks in 2025, and it was made worse when edge Bryce Huff suddenly called it a career at age 27. It's not just a matter of finding a quality pass-rusher who can pair adequately enough with All-Pro Nick Bosa, it's essentially having enough bodies on the perimeter of the defensive line.
That's where D-line needs exceed those of, let's say, safety depth or even the offensive line.
Unfortunately, this year's class of edge rushers isn't exceptionally promising. But there are some worthy targets who'd be able to provide an impact right out of the gate:
- Cashius Howell, Texas A&M
- Keldric Faulk, Auburn
- T.J. Parker, Clemson
- Zion Young, Missouri
- R Mason Thomas, Oklahoma
- David Bailey, Texas Tech
Granted, the availability of any of these prospects will be fluid, given the 26 other selections taking place before San Francisco is scheduled to be on the clock.
But, unless the 49ers grab an interim pass-rusher off the free-agent pile to fill the void, it's almost a guarantee their first selection will be an edge who can help turn around what was a horrid pass rush a season ago.
