49ers need to have an uncomfortable conversation about Trent Williams

And the offensive line as a whole.

The San Francisco 49ers lost a rough game on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. There were many areas where the team came up short, but the play of left tackle Trent Williams -- and the offensive line as a whole -- is drawing scrutiny.

Williams allowed four pressures against Jacksonville and has not looked great for much of this season with his Week 1 performance against the Seattle Seahawks causing concern as well.

Quarterback Brock Purdy was under pressure a lot during the game, which certainly contributed to the rough outing he had overall, as he threw two interceptions and also lost a fumble as he was sacked.

The O-line isn't just struggling to protect Purdy, though. It's struggling to create holes in the running game, too. The Niners are the only team in the NFL without a rushing touchdown this season, which is remarkable considering Kyle Shanahan-led offenses almost always run the ball well.

Running back Christian McCaffrey has been effective this season but more as a receiver than as a rusher. He just has not had a ton of room to run when the ball has been handed off to him, so he has struggled to get much of anything going on the ground.

While Williams does not in any way deserve all of the blame for all the O-line's struggles, the 37 year old is going to be scrutinized more given the fact that he will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame someday and has been one of the best left tackles in football for some time.

He is getting up there, though, in age, so the 49ers must be thinking how long they can go before they have to seriously start thinking about a replacement for him.

Replacing him this season would be a bit rash and is shortsighted, especially considering they do not have any good options to replace him on the roster. But going forward, the Niners may have to think about how much they can rely on Williams especially if the O-line continues to struggle.

Williams himself does not sound overly concerned about things. It is possible he and his linemates have just had a bit of a rough start to the season and will improve as it progresses, but this is not the first time at O-line issues have reared their ugly head in recent years for San Francisco.

This is going to be something to watch for the rest of this season.
