With the San Francisco 49ers off to a perfect 4-0 start, now is not the time to get complacent. They’ve played well, but there are still glaring holes with the roster general manager John Lynch should be looking to fill by whatever means necessary.
Looking around the NFL, there are some teams off to brutal starts that may be interested in offloading some of their veteran players, and DeMeco Ryans’ Houston Texans are very much in that boat.
The Texans are 0-4 on the season, and while there is still time to get things turned around, especially considering three of their four losses have been very close contests, it’s hard for a team to dig itself out of a hole that big to start things off.
If the Texans continue to struggle going into the trade deadline, then there is a decent chance they’ll be open to trading edge rusher Danielle Hunter.
Danielle Hunter is a perfect 49ers trade target
The soon-to-be 32 year old has made the Pro Bowl five times in his career. Hunter started all 17 games each of the last four seasons and has recorded 54 sacks in that span, including 15 last season.
For a Niners team that is missing so many key pieces on the defensive line, a presence like Hunter would be such a massive get for Raheem Morris’ defense and could give San Francisco the edge it desperately needs as it tries to make the playoffs.
Hunter is signed through the 2027 season and is owed a lot of money. He signed a one-year, $40 million extension earlier this year, so he is not going to come cheap by any stretch. But if things continue to go bad for the Texans, they may actually be happy to get some money off the books.
That means the Niners could be in a position where they have to part ways with draft capital, which is more than worth it to land a player of Hunter’s caliber.
Plus, ideally if they can get Nick Bosa back on the field and fully healthy, pairing the two of them together would be an absolute nightmare for other teams and could give San Francisco the pass rush it hasn’t had in a long time.
Ryans used to be the defensive coordinator in San Francisco, so maybe he can help the 49ers out and get Houston’s front office to strike a deal with Lynch and Co.
Hunter is just what they need, so the Niners need to make it happen.
