49ers' next move after trading out of draft's 1st round is painfully obvious

The Niners got more draft capital and get handed a gift in the process.

Round 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft sure came with plenty of shocks, including the Los Angeles Rams' decision to use the 13th overall pick on Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, a potential successor to the future Hall of Famer, Matthew Stafford.

Less surprising, though, was the San Francisco 49ers' choice to trade, not once, but twice -- moving down from No. 27 overall in a two-part trade that ultimately landed a Round 3 selection and put the Niners atop the pecking order in Round 2 at No. 33 overall.

That means general manager John Lynch and Co. now have their choice from every single player not selected over the first 32 picks from Thursday night.

The added draft capital will be nice, yes. But there was another development that now plays right into San Francisco's plans, and it couldn't be any better.

49ers must hone in on CB Jermod McCoy to kick off Round 2 of NFL Draft

If it wasn't for a January 2025 ACL tear, Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy would've been a top-10 selection in this year's class. With his recovery from the injury well underway, there's little doubting he'll be back and ready for action in time for training camp.

And it just so happens he slipped out of the first round entirely.

McCoy is one of the few blue-chip prospects from an otherwise uninspiring draft class in 2026, and the 49ers now have the perfect chance not only to grab him to kick off Round 2, but they'll also maximize the value by waiting until the second day while also having added to their draft stock.

Now, many a Niners fan may think cornerback isn't as pressing a need as, let's say, wide receiver or a pass-rusher. But, considering San Francisco registered a mere six interceptions last season (tied for second worst in the league) and doesn't appear fully sold on third-year corner Renardo Green, having a chance at someone like McCoy is simply too good to pass up.

Putting it bluntly, the 49ers need their next crop of up-and-coming cornerstone stars, and McCoy fits the mold perfectly.

The Niners need not hesitate when Round 2 kicks off.
