It's an obvious move.

Once again, the San Francisco 49ers are set to enter a season with a group of stars held together by duct tape and optimism. Behind the first line of noteworthy players, Kyle Shanahan's team is relying on unproven depth pieces and low-cost veterans.

The offensive line is a perfect example. Trent Williams remains one of the best tackles in football, but the rest of the group is incomplete.

ESPN's Matt Bowen made the solution crystal clear. He named the 49ers as the top landing spot for free agent guard Kevin Zeitler.

At a relatively low price, San Francisco shouldn't hesitate to bring in the veteran.

The Niners are currently set to start Connor Colby at left guard. The former seventh-round pick was inconsistent at best in his rookie season and remains a weak link in San Francisco's front. He certainly showed flashes of solid play, but Shanahan's team can't afford to lose games due to his inexperience.

At 36 years old, Zeitler isn't a long-term answer at guard. He would likely only be on the roster for one season, but his presence would still be valuable for the Niners.

Zeitler would be the perfect short-term replacement. He could help develop Colby while filling in as the starter at left guard in 2026.

Bowen said, "The veteran has a physical inside presence, using his power to displace defensive tackles. And he has the movement ability to pull on gap schemes, which fits into Kyle Shanahan's system. Zeitler also uses his strong base in protection, ranking 37th out of 65 qualifying guards in pass block win rate last season (92.4%). He would be an upgrade to the interior of San Francisco's O-line, which saw left guard Spencer Burford leave for the Raiders in free agency."

As the veteran core of their roster ages, the 49ers need to add pieces that can help them compete for championships. They've been able to get by with budget options on the offensive line for years, but this unit is one injury from collapsing. Bringing in a veteran like Zeitler would help stabilize the group, making it a true strength.

According to Spotrac, Zeitler's current market value is around $9.2 million. That's considerably less than other guards have been paid thisoffseason.

For just one year and less than $10 million, this deal should be a no-brainer for San Francisco.
