49ers landed a hidden gem with under-the-radar free-agent signing

He could be a key starter right away.

While other positions certainly commanded more need and interest, the San Francisco 49ers also made a couple of less-discussed deals to address their offensive line.

Grabbing former New England Patriots offensive tackle Vederian Lowe immediately solves the need for a quality swing tackle and potentially provides the Niners with some insurance in case things go truly south with veteran left tackle Trent Williams.

However, San Francisco's subsequent pickup of former Philadelphia Eagles lineman Brett Toth might be one of those moves that largely goes unnoticed now but proves to be a massive win in the not-to-distant future.

As reported by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on the evening prior to the official start of the league new year, the 49ers are inking Toth to a one-year deal:

Judging by Fowler's report of the 29 year old receiving a 95-percent guarantee on his contract, this isn't a move by the Niners to simply add a competitive camp body who may or may not make the 53-man roster.

Potentially, the West Point graduate who has been in the league since 2019 might end up occupying a key role in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense right out of the gate.

Brett Toth immediately becomes favorite to start for 49ers at left guard

Aside from the Williams situation, San Francisco is largely set for its offensive line entering 2026, at least from center to right tackle.

The left guard spot, however, is anyone's guess.

Spencer Burford is expected to depart via free agency, and the 49ers don't have any clear-cut option to fill in there aside from last year's seventh-round rookie, Connor Colby, who might be better suited to reserve duties than a starting role.

Toth, primarily a backup for much of his career, seems to have come into his own as of late, and this thread from Brad Graham of @TheSFNiners might give fans a bit more insight to why the Toth deal could be a hidden-gem move.

Worth noting, Toth saw plenty of action last year with Philly and performed well over those 17 games played, by far the most he had seen over the course of his career:

If San Francisco gets that kind of production from Toth in a full-time starting role, it'd potentially be an upgrade over both Burford and Colby, locking down a spot that was generally viewed as a weakness a year ago.

And while some of the 49ers' other moves in free agency certainly command more attention (thank you, Mike Evans), the Toth pickup might be the sneakiest best deal of the offseason.
