Two well-known 49ers insiders don't think Brock Purdy will command a market-setting contract extension this offseason.
The No. 1 talking point for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason won't be whether or not they should extend quarterback Brock Purdy (they should), but rather what the specifics of the contract should be.
Purdy has a case to become the highest-paid signal-caller in the NFL as he enters the first year of eligibility for an extension. In light of other top-paid quarterbacks, the final pick from the 2022 draft can not only argue he's accomplished more in his brief career than many of his contemporaries, but he can also point out how much money he's saved the organization by playing on the cheapest contract possible among all players drafted in 2022.
Plus, Purdy all but bailed the Niners out of the quarterback Trey Lance debacle.
A new deal for Purdy could wind up in the range of $60 million-plus per season. Yet two notable personalities from within the organization have already claimed San Francisco won't go that high.
Is that mere speculation, or are the 49ers subtly coming into pending discussions on the low end?
2 Niners insiders feel 49ers won't reset QB market with Brock Purdy
The Niners' two primary radio personalities, Greg Papa and Tim Ryan, weighed in on Purdy's future contract, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Ryan felt as if San Francisco wasn't going to view a record-setting contract for Purdy as the inevitable outcome:
"I don't think starting today it's all about 'How do they get Brock done in the next five months, and is it going to be the richest contract in pro football for quarterbacks?' My opinion is that is not going to be the first priority."
Papa, meanwhile, was more direct with numbers:
"If there's a workable number they could get him signed to — in the low 40s average annual value — they may pursue that. But do you want to do one where the average annual value is in the 50s? Or maybe approaching [Cowboys quarterback] Dak Prescott, and you're in the 60s? Then you have to go through your roster … Who's coming off the roster? What positions will be marginalized because the quarterback is making so much money?"
It's important to note both Papa and Ryan work for the 49ers as gameday radio personalities, so it's feasible they're serving as organizational mouthpieces, which isn't uncommon in discussions of this nature.
Additionally, Purdy made it clear at the end of the season he doesn't want negotiations to drag out in a manner similar to how the Niners handled discussions with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk entering 2024.
Whether that was a sign of the quarterback's humility or a possible "warning shot" to San Francisco is up for debate, but it's clear the back-and-forth games are well underway.
And there'll be plenty of drama and discussions to follow.
