From his perspective, veteran wide receiver Malik Turner hopes 2026 is his most impactful season with the San Francisco 49ers yet.
From the Niners' vantage point, they're hoping Turner doesn't need to provide any significant support whatsoever.
Because, if he does, it means things have gone horribly wrong elsewhere on the depth chart.
Turner, age 30, spent portions of 2022, 2024 and 2025 with San Francisco, largely bouncing back and forth from the practice squad while also having interludes with other franchises, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans. By now, his substantial time spent with the Seattle Seahawks earlier in his career means little, giving the Hawks' coaching change over to Mike Macdonald back in 2024.
Yet the 49ers have still found use for the 6-foot-2 receiver, largely relying upon him amid injuries, especially last season in which he saw action in three games and even had one target.
49ers don't want to rely on Malik Turner
It's nothing against Turner. It appears he understands his role as a back-end-of-the-roster kind of player who'll make some waves in training camp with the third- and fourth-string units, rounding out the depth chart.
But the Niners spent considerable effort revamping their wide receiver room this offseason, onboarding veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk while using their top pick in last April's draft on De'Zhaun Stribling.
Tack on hopeful bounce-backs from incumbents like Ricky Pearsall, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, and the periphery wideouts aren't exactly names to watch.
While Turner's special teams prowess does him some favors, this likely won't be enough to save him a spot on the 53-man roster. Not even close.
Instead, what'd be the most desirable outcome (at least for San Francisco) is Turner putting together some tape during the preseason, potentially earning him a spot on the practice squad as merely a last-ditch emergency option.
Anything more than that would suggest the 49ers have suffered all kinds of receiver attrition, which would be a doomsday scenario.
