It was San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's birthday on Sunday, and his team rewarded him with a victory over the Tennessee Titans, and his quarterback Brock Purdy rewarded him with a wild touchdown pass during the game.
Shanahan was mic'd up for the game. Purdy connected with tight end George Kittle on a jump pass that Shanahan noted after the completion, saying, "Jump pass again. Michael Jordan jump pass."
There may have been a silenced expletive or two that he threw in there, but it was his birthday, so we can cut him a little slack.
It definitely seems like the type of move that Shanahan is not a fan of. The fact that he said "again" in reference to the pass makes it seem like this is something he has gone over with Purdy in the past, probably something to the effect of, "Hey, you know those jump passes you do sometimes? Maybe don't do them anymore."
"Michael Jordan jump pass, way to be a baller Brock."

But when Purdy came back to the sideline he gave him nothing but love, saying, "Way to be a baller, Brock!"
After the game, Shanahan was asked if he taught Purdy the jump pass, and his answer was pretty funny:
"No, not at all. We give him crap for it a lot. But when it works, we call him Michael Jordan... We like cleats in the ground and being able to drive the ball and all that, but sometimes he's gotta use another club and it's cool that he's got that one."
Purdy is not afraid to get creative to complete a pass. If he has to jump or scramble around for a while, or alter his arm angle, he is willing to do that in order to make a play.
It can get him in trouble sometimes, but when it works, it is very exciting and feeds into his reputation as a gunslinger who is not afraid to air it out.
Shanahan had a nice birthday win and is continuing to prove that he deserves Coach of the Year honors. He probably will not win, which will be a continuation of disrespect, but the job he and his coaching staff have done this season has been nothing short of remarkable.
The fact San Francisco is at 10-4 right now and has a chance at the No. 1 seed in the NFC with three weeks to go is remarkable, given it has lost its two best defensive players.
He and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh deserve a ton of credit for keeping the team competitive and getting the most out of their available players, especially since the 49ers were without a lot of offensive players the first half of the season.
We will see how this season ends up, but maybe Purdy will deliver another jump pass or two just to get under his head coach's skin.
