Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard all about how the San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver position is a big ol' mess. In the past week, Ricky Pearsall has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the entire season, and Mike Evans, Christian Kirk, and De'Zhaun Stribling have all missed practice at some point.
It's not an ideal position to be in, to say the least. If Evans, Kirk, and Stribling are all still dinged up come Week 1, that would leave Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, and Jacob Cowing as the 49ers' starting wide receivers. Not ideal.
Fortunately, the 49ers still have enough time to prepare them for such a scenario. They don't necessarily need to rush into making a move and risk an ill-fated decision.
The Niners could also wait until November's trade deadline to add help, giving them about two months after the start of the season to reassess their pass catchers. If injuries continue to pile up, then reinforcements may need to be pursued.
Patience may be key for 49ers amid WR injury concerns
One name that might make sense down the road is Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. Ernesto Cova of Dawg Pound Daily floated the idea, though he recommended that San Francisco do it before kickoff.
Cova argues that the Browns drafted Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion, both of whom have asserted themselves in the early goings of training camp. That, in Cova's opinion, makes Jeudy someone the Browns can afford to part ways with. As the Browns' contributor states:
The Browns shouldn't be shopping him, but if a team comes knocking with the right offer, it might be tough to turn them down. That's why, given the latest string of injuries out in the Bay Area, it wouldn't be shocking to see the San Francisco 49ers inquire about his availability... If [San Francisco is] desperate enough to overpay for Jeudy, the Browns should certainly be willing to listen.
Nothing against Jeudy, but right now, the 49ers still have options at receiver. Yes, injuries are mounting, but pass catchers still have over a month to recover from current ailments. Adding Jeudy right now would not be the best play for GM John Lynch and company. They need to let the next month play out before they decide to look elsewhere.
If the season begins and Evans, Kirk, and Stribling are still dinged up, then adding Jeudy or another insurance policy seems logical. For now, however, this is a move that either doesn't need to happen or can wait until later in the year.
