The San Francisco 49ers head into Week 5 still standing as one of the only undefeated teams across the NFL. The Niners' first four games came with significant challenges, and some untimely injuries, though the team remains standing. From their Week 1 victory over the Super Bowl-favorite Los Angeles Rams to their Week 4 victory over the formidable Denver Broncos, it's been an eventful start to the season.
The next four games on the slate for San Francisco include some challenging opponents, and they may just shape up to be even more challenging for the 49ers than the former.
Next 4 weeks will show what this 49ers team is actually made of
Week 5 brings the Niners up to Lumen Field to take on the reigning Super Bowl champions in the Seattle Seahawks. It's the first time these two rivals have faced since the Seahawks bounced San Francisco from the playoffs in the divisional round last season. That game brought insult to injury after the Seahawks soundly defeated the 49ers in Week 18 to secure the No. 1 seed.
But that was then and this is now. The Seahawks remain a formidable opponent, but the Washington Commanders showed the NFL world they're beatable. With Kenneth Walker gone due to free agency, and his replacement on injured reserve, means Seattle's run game is hurting.
Exploiting that weakness is essential for the Niners to win.
After the Seahawks game in Week 5, the 49ers move on to face the Washington Commanders. They've been dealing with quarterback injuries, though it's looking like Jayden Daniels will have returned by then. Washington's pass defense has been a weakness so far, so relying on Brock Purdy and his spectacular accuracy will be key to winning.
Following the Commanders, the Niners take a long trip to Atlanta where they'll take on Michael Penix Jr. and Kevin Stefanski's offense. At present, the Falcons sit at 2-2, but with upcoming games against teams missing their star quarterback in the Baltimore Ravens and the Chicago Bears, that's subject to change.
The Falcons put on a show for a national audience on Monday Night Football during Week 4, and rode their running backs to victory. The 49ers possess a much better run defense than New Orleans, though, so Atlanta will need to find a different way, and it won't be so easy against San Francisco.
Subsequently, following their Week 8 bye, the 49ers then move on to face the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders have improved immeasurably over last season, winning their first three contests out of the gate, and they only took their first loss in Week 4 at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. Kirk Cousins has been playing as good as he ever has, and weapons on the field like Brock Bowers or Ashton Jeanty are heavily impactful.
The Raiders will be a big game at one of the most critical chunks of the schedule. The 49ers have the benefit of entering this game fresh off of their bye, but that doesn't mean it will be an easy showdown. Vegas has put together a real turnaround this season, and unless the Niners bring their A-game, it could be rather difficult.
The first four weeks showed the 49ers can win ball games even in the face of multiple injuries and setbacks. The next four weeks, however, could prove to be a testing ground for a team that has been exemplary in their division to start the season.
A 4-0 start earned everyone's attention.
The next month is where San Francisco either keeps it or gives it back.
