The San Francisco 49ers have consistently (and uncoincidentally) boasted one of the NFL's top offenses since hiring Kyle Shanahan in 2017. His creative, well-designed scheme has been a fantasy football money printer for going on a decade with no signs of slowing down.

While it's never a bad idea to invest in the Shanahan-led 49ers, 2026 feels like an opportune time to strike. They're welcoming a new No. 1 wide receiver to round out one of the game's most dynamic skill player corps à la Mike Evans. His arrival only strengthens an attack we all want pieces of.

Evans joins a star-studded group and also somehow fills a need all at once. He gives San Francisco another reliable big-bodied playmaker to eventually complement franchise tight end George Kittle, who's recovering from a torn Achilles suffered last January. Together, they will form a strong three-headed monster with All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey and give quarterback Brock Purdy no shortage of weapons.

Rookie Kaelon Black and Jordan James are set to compete for the 49ers' backup tailback spot. McCaffrey, who just racked up a whopping 450 touches in his age-29 campaign (including the playoffs), isn't exactly a beacon of availability.

How the pass-catching hierarchy shakes out behind Evans and Kittle is something to monitor. More specifically, Ricky Pearsall and the rest of the receiver depth chart have our attention.

There are several high-profile names in the Bay Area, and it'll be fascinating to see how they all fit collectively. Training camp and the preseason will give us a much better picture of what to expect. Post-summer break information will be pouring in, so be on standby as we keep you posted.

Note: This story will be updated regularly throughout the San Francisco 49ers' training camp and preseason.

Latest fantasy football updates for the 49ers: News, injuries and position battles

De'Zhaun Stribling 'outplayed' Titans rookie WR Carnell Tate -- 8/11

Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn didn't mince words, noting that Tate "didn't catch many passes" in the 49ers-Titans joint practice, unlike Stribling, who recorded seven receptions.

The Titans chose Tate with the No. 4 overall selection in this year's NFL Draft. He was widely touted as a polished, pro-ready prospect, putting the cherry on top of Stribling's remarkable performance.

Deebo Samuel listed as starter on 49ers' first unofficial depth chart -- 8/11

San Francisco has Samuel as one of their three first-string receivers heading into an exhibition match with the Tennessee Titans. He joins Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson (h/t Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group).

Let the preseason pecking order be a loose guide, not the be-all and end-all. However, Samuel should be no worse than San Francisco's No. 3 wideout, at least to begin the season. It wouldn't be shocking to see rookie De'Zhaun Stribling become a bigger part of the offense as he gets more experience.

Mike Evans 'moves around as if everything hurts' -- 8/11

George Kittle making 'terrific progress' and gearing up for potential W1 return -- 8/10

There's "a high level of confidence at this point" that Kittle will be in action for the Niners' opener against the Los Angeles Rams (h/t CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz).

It will be nearly eight months since Kittle's Achilles tear when the Niners host the Rams on Sep. 10. The fact that he could be available speaks to his outstanding rehab efforts. Currently going as a back-end TE1, the seven-time Pro Bowler's age (turning 33 in October) and health make him a high-risk, high-reward option.

Christian McCaffrey dealing with 'tightness' -- 8/10

McCaffrey sat out, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, in what seems to be a maintenance day.

For what it's worth, the 49ers' coaching staff has downplayed the matter. When speaking to the media, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he isn't concerned. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak stated that the team is "just managing" the superstar's workload, as has been the plan for months.

In other words, there's nothing to see here, folks. Keep treating McCaffrey as the top-three RB and tier-one fantasy asset he is.

De'Zhaun Stribling looking like the 49ers' WR1? -- 8/10

Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn wrote that Stribling "already is the best wide receiver on the team. Full stop."

Not Mike Evans or Deebo Samuel, a pair of established, accomplished vets. Not Ricky Pearsall, who will miss 2026 after undergoing knee surgery. It's Stribling who continues to show up and show out for a squad badly in need of a healthy, consistent pass-catcher.

Jake Hutchinson of The Hutch Report is taking 'all the Deebo [Samuel] stock -- 8/7

Samuel should "get touches in a number of ways this year." Assuming health, Hutchinson believes the former All-Pro "goes north of 1,100 all-purpose yards for the first (and last) time since 2023."

It sounds like fantasy managers can do much worse than taking a late flier on Samuel, the consensus WR57 in point-per-reception (PPR) formats. If Hutchinson's foresight proves true, the return on investment will be significant.

De'Zhaun Stribling returns to practice -- 8/6

A five-day hiatus ends with Stribling on the practice field (h/t NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco).

Hopefully, Stribling can regain his momentum in short order. He was turning heads, and the 49ers need him now more than ever with Ricky Pearsall (knee) out for the year and Christian Kirk (calf) hurt.

Mike Evans, Kaelon Black miss practice -- 8/3

Evans is dealing with a "very minor" quad strain (h/t NFL Network's Ian Rapoport), and Black has an adductor issue.

Good grief. It's like clockwork for the 49ers, who are seemingly bitten by the injury bug annually. Hopefully, Evans and Black can rejoin the mix sooner rather than later.

Isaac Guerendo 'healing well' at opportune time -- 8/1

Guerendo tore his pec while lifting weights earlier this offseason and is ostensibly trending in the right direction (h/t ESPN's Nick Wagoner).

With Jordan James out with a broken rib, Guerendo's status bears keeping an eye on. The battle to be star RB Christian McCaffrey's understudy looms large on the fantasy community.

De'Zhaun Stribling logs DNP -- 8/1

Stribling was held out due to hamstring tightness, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner.

You've got to be kidding. Stribling sits out just hours after Ricky Pearsall gets shut down (and Christian Kirk is dealing with a calf strain).

49ers place Ricky Pearsall on season-ending IR -- 8/1

Reading between the lines, Pearsall getting shut down felt inevitable. He'll undergo surgery on his PCL, per 49ers general manager John Lynch (h/t Matt Barrows of The Athletic).

Bringing back Deebo Samuel for a second stint with the club was an informal signal that Pearsall would be on the shelf for a while. Alas, the prophecy fulfilled itself in the worst way possible.

Without Pearsall, Mike Evans, who turns 33 on Aug. 21, is the clear-cut alpha of the Niners' wideout group. Samuel and second-round rookie De'Zhaun Stribling suddenly make for intriguing sleepers.

49ers' Asst. HC Chris Foerster, Mike Evans praise De'Zhaun Stribling -- 7/31

Foerster added that Stribling is "very mature for a young guy," via Vic Tafur and Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Evans identified the Mississippi product when asked if any young wideouts have caught his attention: "Strib had a really good offseason and OTAs, and he's continuing that in training camp."

Game recognizes game, as the saying goes. Getting the stamp of approval from Evans, an all-time great, and one of his coaches is encouraging for Stribling's upside WR5/6 case in fantasy.

Ian Rapoport reveals 49ers reunite with WR Deebo Samuel -- 7/30

Samuel and the Niners reunite after one season apart, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract worth "up to" $7 million.

The timing of the move is certainly noteworthy amid Ricky Pearsall's abruptly murky 2026 outlook. Samuel's familiarity with the 49ers' system should allow him to hit the ground running, complicating matters for second-round rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling and vet Christian Kirk.

Surgery not off the table for Ricky Pearsall? -- 7/30

While Pearsall and the Niners would rather avoid going under the knife, it may ultimately be the best path forward for all parties involved. David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard suggests "drastic measures" might prove necessary despite the "great risk" if the swelling persists.

It just keeps getting worse. Lombardi was replying to a post about how Pearsall would face a lengthy recovery process (nine to 12 months) if a procedure is required. If so, De'Zhaun Stribling suddenly becomes incredibly important to the 49ers' passing attack.

Jordan James officially diagnosed with rib injury -- 7/29

We now know why James didn't finish practice earlier in the week. He suffered a rib fracture and "will miss some time," according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.

How long James is out remains to be seen, though his unavailability gives Kaelon Black a leg up for the 49ers' pivotal RB2 role.

Ricky Pearsall faces brutal setback -- 7/29

Pearsall has swelling "related to the PCL injury he suffered last year," per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. The 49ers are exploring 'all options,' and there's some level of 'concern.'

That's brutal to hear. Few players fit the "when healthy" moniker like Pearsall, who's primed for a third-year breakout while lining up opposite a future Hall of Famer in Mike Evans. The 2024 first-round pick's status as a rising WR2 is officially in jeopardy.

De'Zhaun Stribling continues to shine -- 7/27

Stribling is putting together one impressive showing following another. He was "getting open to the boundaries" and reeled in a nice catch-and-run touchdown (h/t David Lombardi of the San Francisco Standard).

Albeit a polarizing real-life selection, Stribling is a guy to watch. His well-chronicled blocking prowess will get him on the field, yet his speed and after-the-catch ability can keep him in the fold.

Kaelon Black draws lofty comparison -- 7/27

Black's burst and explosiveness have been on display thus far, highlighted by an 80-yard touchdown run on Day 2. Sports Illustrated's Grant Cohn even went so far as to say that the Indiana product looks like five-time Pro Bowler Alvin Kamara with the ball.

Black, who was widely considered one of the biggest reaches of the 2026 draft class, must be doing something right if someone likened him to Kamara. He's come in and made a strong first impression, though, and finds himself in one of the league's most important handcuff duels to watch.

Jordan James' mysterious absence opens early door for Kaelon Black -- 7/27

James was "active in the first few team periods," but "then wasn't involved the rest of the way, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. The matter, albeit unclear, paved the way for Black to get "extended work."

NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco reveals 49ers WR Christian Kirk gets hurt on Day 1 of camp -- 7/27

Veteran wideout Christian Kirk went down with a calf strain on the first day of practice. His timeline is uncertain.

ESPN's Nick Wagoner reveals Kyle Shanahan again makes brief appearance -- 7/27

Shanahan is participating on a limited basis while recovering from a serious car accident that occurred on July 14. He reportedly broke his nose, hand and three ribs, needed more than 40 stitches and suffered a concussion.

49ers make unsurprising George Kittle move -- 7/26

As expected, Kittle was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. He can be activated at any moment, however.

Buy the Kittle dip. He could legitimately be available for Week 1 and is a locked-in top-three TE in all formats when right. The upside juice is certainly worth the squeeze, especially at a perennially thin onesie position.
