The San Francisco 49ers seemingly lose a new wide receiver every week. In Week 1, it was De’Zhaun Stribling, and in Week 2, it was Demarcus Robinson. While neither player should be out for the season, it’s still concerning and the Niners made a move by signing veteran Brandin Cooks to the practice squad.
If San Francisco loses any more receivers though, then it may have to turn to the trade market in order to ensure it has adequate wide receiver depth.
Jauan Jennings might just be one of their most logical options, especially with how poorly his start with the Minnesota Vikings has gone.

Obviously, it’s only been two games but Jennings only got one target in Week 1 and then missed Week 2 because of a personal matter. That’s way too small of a sample size to say he is a bust or anything, but if he never materializes into a viable target with Minnesota, then a return to San Francisco would make all the sense in the world.
Jennings is obviously incredibly familiar with the Niners and the offense head coach Kyle Shanahan runs. He and quarterback Brock Purdy established a solid chemistry with one another, so he’s a guy who could come right in immediately and make an impact, which is exactly what the Niners need.
Last season, Jennings had 643 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. That was with him as the No. 1 receiver on the depth chart, which is pretty remarkable when one thinks about it. Jennings probably shouldn’t be any higher than No. 3 on the depth chart, yet necessity forced him into that role with the San Francisco.
After Deebo Samuel and Dre Greenlaw returned to the 49ers in free agency, it would only be fitting if Jennings came back as well. He would thrive if he was in the field with Mike Evans, Deebo, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey. No one would be paying attention to Jennings, so he could go back to being that go-to third-down receiver he was, previously, with San Francisco.
Of course, trading for Jennings would block some of the younger receivers on the roster, but with how the 49ers look so far this season, they cannot afford to let young guys learn on the job. They need guys like Cooks and Jennings, who can just be plugged in and have the experience to know what to do.
The Niners and Vikings are scheduled to face off in Week 11 in Mexico City. That would be after the trade deadline, so if the Niners were able to pull off a trade for Jennings, then he wouldn’t get the chance to face his old team.
But that may not be a bad thing for a 49ers team that is in need of wide receivers.
