The San Francisco 49ers lost to the Atlanta Falcons in embarrassing fashion on Sunday, 29-20. They turned the ball over, committed stupid penalties, and just played all-around sloppy football against an inferior team.
Here’s the good news, though: This loss could end up being a positive in the long run.
Losing a game like this is the wake-up call San Francisco needed. Sure, the 49ers were 6-0 coming into the contest, but that record did not tell the full story. They won 36-30 over the Arizona Cardinals back in Week 3 in a game that was way too close, and the Niners nearly collapsed in the second half against the second half of Week 6 against the Washington Commanders.
I argued after that narrow victory over Washington that it would be good for the 49ers in the long run, but maybe they needed the full wake-up call of a loss to hammer home that this season isn’t going to be gifted to them.
It was a short week going up against a team out east, and they were down Mike Evans and countless other receivers. So anyone thinking the 49ers were just going to waltz in there and win easily were sorely mistaken.
49ers get a rude wake-up call in Week 7 loss to Falcons
One positive to take away is that even with all the sloppy play and injuries, the game was relatively close. The Niners had the football with several minutes to go in the fourth quarter down six and could have driven down and scored a touchdown which would have tied the game. An Eddy Piñeiro extra point would have given them the lead, but those are far from a given right now, which is a whole separate matter.
But remember back to 2023. The Niners lost three straight games going into the bye week that season. That was a big letdown and made many wonder if they were legit, but they came back after the bye, went 7-2, secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and made it to the Super Bowl.
Now San Francisco is 6-1. It no longer has the pressure of being an undefeated team, still has a comfortable lead in the NFC West, and is entering a bye week in which key players can get healthy. And maybe even general manager John Lynch can try getting the team some reinforcements.
Losing to the Falcons is still embarrassing, but getting upset like that is a rude splash of cold water to the face of the 49ers as if to say, “Wake up!” Nothing is going to be given this season and no opponent should be taken lightly.
If this is a one-off performance and they play strong football the rest of the season, then most will hardly remember it, but if this sort of sloppy play continues then it doesn’t matter who is on the field for the 49ers, they’ll continue to lose games and embarrass themselves on a weekly basis.
