The San Francisco 49ers have to be prepared for the possibility that wide receiver Jauan Jennings will depart in free agency. He may ask for too much money, and the Niners may simply have to look for a cheaper replacement.
A recent mock draft has San Francisco selecting a perfect replacement for Jennings in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft in Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields.
Vic Tafur of The Athletic wrote why Fields would be a good fit for the 49ers, saying, "Fields isn’t as flashy as the receivers picked ahead of him, but he is a nice combination of size (6-foot-4, 218 pounds), strength, sticky hands and a special high-point catch ability. He lacks home run speed but will be a reliable target on third down and in the red zone, and is also a good run blocker."
Reliable target on third down? A good run blocker? Sounds like a younger, cheaper Jennings if there ever was one.
Last season with the Fighting Irish, Fields had 630 receiving yards on 36 receptions with five touchdowns.
In 2023 and 2024 at the University of Virginia Fields had over 800 receiving yards and five touchdowns each season.
While speed is what the Niners are probably looking for the most at wide receiver this offseason, if they lose a guy like Jennings, they are losing everything he brings to the table.
The fiery veteran has proven to be a favorite of quarterback Brock Purdy on third down, and everyone has seen the videos of Jennings blocking defensive backs into the water coolers on the sideline. Replacing that sort of competitiveness and tenacity is no small feat.
Fields would surely not be identical to Jennings, and it would take some time for him to find his footing in the NFL. But on paper, he definitely has the size and skills to do a lot of the things Jennings has done so well since the 49ers drafted him in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
If the Niners go a different direction in the draft, or if Fields is not there, they could make a run at veteran receiver Keenan Allen in free agency. Allen is an even more efficient third-down target than Jennings, so he could replace some of that production.
But if the 49ers want a younger option who can be molded to what's wanted in a receiver, then drafting Fields seems like a pretty good option.
