While it seemed like the San Francisco 49ers had put all of the conspiracy theories and nonsense behind them with regard to the team’s practice facility being affected by an electrical substation that was somehow harming the players, that chatter will not die with news the Niners are reportedly looking into moving their practice facility.
In a recent article in The Athletic by Vic Tafur that is mainly focused on new team CEO Al Guido, there is a line about the team exploring a relocation of its practice facility:
“Additionally, they are exploring a possible nearby relocation as they are running out of space at and next to Levi’s Stadium.”
It’s a pretty benign statement that could be explained away as a simple logistical matter, but those who don’t want the substation theory to die will clearly seize upon it as some sort of evidence that the Niners know the practice facility is being impacted by EMF, but they just don’t want to admit it.
That’s the way conspiracy theorists think, though. There can’t just be a normal, logical answer for something. It has to be part of some sort of grander or larger scheme that is meant to cover something up.
The 49ers may very well have a lot of injuries again in the 2026 season, but no matter what the conspiracists think, it will have nothing to do with a substation.
San Francisco has a lot of older, injury-prone players. Naturally that lends itself to being one of the most banged-up teams in the NFL. We saw that play out last season, and we’ve seen it play out time and time again during the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch regime.
Maybe it’s because they practice too hard, maybe they don't train well enough, maybe it’s because of the age of their personnel, or maybe it’s because football is a violent game and they’ve gotten a little unlucky.
No matter what it is, the Niners will have to deal with injuries. The big fear is whether they have the adequate depth to deal with injuries at some key positions.
They were able to get by last year, thanks in large part to a pretty weak schedule. But this season, they will not have that same luxury. They will have to beat some tough teams if they’re banged up, and based on how the 49ers performed against the Seattle Seahawks late last season when they weren’t at full strength, it may be tough for them to overcome a lot of injuries.
Maybe if San Francisco moves the practice field it will at least help, psychologically, if there are players who think the substation is impacting health.
But in reality, any injuries the Niners do sustain will not have much of anything to do with where they practice.
