49ers have a concerning addition to their Week 7 injury report
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers would prefer Jauan Jennings be fully available and healthy for their high-profile Week 7 showdown against the Chiefs.
Last February, wide receiver Jauan Jennings could have been Super Bowl MVP if the San Francisco 49ers would have held on against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Instead, the Niners lost that game, all but ensuring Jennings' seemingly impossible bid for the game's top individual accolade.
For the first time since that showdown, the Niners and Chiefs will square off again, this time in a Week 7 grudge match at Levi's Stadium where San Francisco aims to enact some vengeance against its Super Bowl nemesis.
Unfortunately, there's a possibility Jennings won't be available.
On the Wednesday prior to the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Jennings would be held out of practice for the day while dealing with a hip injury.
The extent of the injury isn't known, and it didn't appear as if the team's leading pass catcher suffered any sort of problem in the Week 6 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
Considering Jennings' emergence as a top threat so far in 2024, leading the 49ers with 404 receiving yards, potentially not having him available for a nationally televised game against KC is concerning.
49ers' opening injury report for Week 7 vs. Chiefs
Shanahan also updated the media on other players who were either sitting out Wednesday's practice or were limited:
Did not practice
- K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back)
- K Jake Moody (ankle)
- WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
- DT Maliek Collins (knee)
- DE Leonard Floyd (rest)
Limited
- WR Deebo Samuel (wrist)
- DT Jordan Elliott (knee)
- RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)
- S Malik Mustapha (ankle)
If there's modestly good news on the injury front, seeing Mason and Mustapha limited in practice after exiting Week 6's game against the Hawks is promising.
There was an understandable fear of Mason, the No. 2 rusher in the NFL entering Week 7, missing time because of his injury, while Mustapha's first-quarter interception helped alleviate concerns about a thin safety depth chart.
Understandably, the rest of the week's injury news will reveal how much concern the Niners will have before facing KC.
San Francisco kicks off against Kansas City on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 4:25 p.m. ET from Levi's Stadium.
