The San Francisco 49ers didn't hesitate to stage several reunions during the offseason, bringing back familiar faces like wide receiver Deebo Samuel and linebacker Dre Greenlaw in moves that had to be considered fan-favorites.

Now, general manager John Lynch completed the cycle by executing a blockbuster trade with the free-falling Indianapolis Colts for Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.

News of the transaction broke not long after Indy moved All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson to San Francisco's NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks.

There was no shortage of speculation the 49ers would hone in on Buckner, who openly expressed frustration with how things were progressing in Indianapolis. In the wake of the Colts firing general manager Chris Ballard, the chances of Buckner being moved only increased.

Side note, it's quite procative now for Buckner to square off against his old teammate in Indy, Nelson, when the Niners and Seahawks square off later this season.

DeForest Buckner trade creates full-circle moment for 49ers

Buckner, San Francisco's top pick from the 2016 NFL Draft out of Oregon, enjoyed a fruitful four season in the Bay Area before being traded to Indy in 2020, a move general manager John Lynch later admitted was one of the most difficult in his tenure to date.

The 49ers largely struggled to replace Buckner in the years that followed, attempting to get names like Javon Kinlaw, Alfred Collins, Javon Hargrave and others to plug the void, all with varying degrees of success but not coming close to Buckner's prowess.

Buckner, meanwhile, has to be thrilled about the reunion. While there are only a handful of familiar faces remaining from his initial tenure with the Niners, now including Deebo, Greenlaw, linebacker Fred Warner, defensive end Nick Bosa and tight end George Kittle, the 32-year-old veteran has to be thrilled to rejoin a Super Bowl contender.

While there are questions about how San Francisco will go about shuffling its defensive line, thanks to the combined presences of defensive tackles Osa Odighizuwa and Gracen Halton, adding Buckner nevertheless provides Lynch and Co. with some serious thump in the trenches.

The 49ers unquestionably need that if they hope to retain their spot as a true Super Bowl contender.
