There isn't much more that can be said about the San Francisco 49ers' swarm of injury problems over the first five weeks.
After all, no team in the NFL has more money committed to injury lists than the Niners right now, and it's not even close.
Yet San Francisco's Week 6 opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are dealing with plenty of injuries, too, which makes for a provocative context entering Sunday's bout at Raymond James Stadium.
Granted, the Bucs aren't relying on their backup quarterback as are the 49ers with Mac Jones, who's poised to get the start with Brock Purdy likely out. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is playing at an MVP-caliber level over the first five weeks, yet he may very well be without two of his top weapons in wide receivers Mike Evans (hamstring) and Chris Godwin (leg). Running back Bucky Irving is also dealing with foot and ankle injuries, and all three offensive weapons have already missed practices this week.
Cornerback Zyon McCollum was also out, his arm seen in a sling at practice.
Irving, who is having something of a down year after rushing for more than 1,100 yards a year ago, missed Tampa Bay's Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks, while Evans hasn't suited up since Week 3.
As was the case with the Niners a week ago against the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Todd Bowles' squad might be forced to feature many a B-team member to plug the gaps.
49ers and Buccaneers both dealing with significant injury problems
San Francisco might be trending toward getting healthier despite Jones getting another shot as the starter, but head coach Kyle Shanahan may still be forced into fielding plenty of backup-caliber offensive weapons.
Wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle/ribs) missed Week 5, but the latter was able to be limited in practice.
Heck, even Jones was limited after dealing with a knee issue in the Rams game. But, given Purdy's status and unlikely availability, the 49ers may have no other choice but to have QB2 take the field again despite whatever pain he's dealing with.
As such, the Niners' road showdown on Sunday, Oct. 12 might be a bit clunky, especially considering Tampa Bay is dealing with plenty of similar issues.
