The San Francisco 49ers are quite the anomaly as far as roster building goes. Despite some very poor returns from the NFL Draft in recent years, as John Lynch has received a good chunk of criticism for going against what the consensus Big Board dictates. However, they have enough hits to consistently replenish a contending roster that always has a puncher's chance to make it out of the NFC.
ESPN remains very complementary of the Niners' roster as a whole, ranking them 11th in the NFL despite going through some major changes. However, Mike Clay noted that the interior defensive line was the biggest area of need on the roster. Clay implied that 2026 could be a major test of Lynch's drafting acumen on the defensive side of the ball.
After spending two picks on second-rounder Alfred Collins and fourth-rounder CJ West last season before adding another X-factor to the mix in Gracen Halton during the 2026 NFL Draft, Lynch will need to hope that his young prospects grow.
Without it, San Francisco could be in for some very scary times as far as stopping the run goes.
49ers' DT production could be a big win for John Lynch in 2026
Collins' 42.4 Pro Football Focus grade last season, which ranked 123rd out of 134 qualified defensive linemen, is not an ideal start for someone who was selected with a Top-50 pick. Collins' 14 pressures validate concerns about his upside as a pass-rusher, but even the run defense didn't intimidate many last season.
West was even worse, ranking 130th out of 134 with just nine pressures on the season. Halton should help as a pass-rusher, as his quick first step is perhaps the best arrow he has in his quiver, but banking on these young players to suddenly hit their stride without former coordinator Robert Saleh's mind to back them up could come back to bite them hard.
The 49ers' defensive line, once heralded as one of the best in the league, has now been reduced to a shell of what it once was. Nick Bosa has struggled to stay healthy, the pass rush outside of him was clearly not getting home as frequently as it should, and many of the young space-eaters on the interior have struggled
Lynch could shut up all the doubters if one of more of these young guns break out, but that is far from guaranteed.
