49ers get better-than-bad news for Jauan Jennings on Week 4 injury report

He's still not out of the woods yet.

2025 has been a frustrating year for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

Not only did Jennings fail to receive a hefty contract extension prior to Week 1, although he did get an incentive-laded pay raise, but the team's 2024 leading wide receiver has also spent much of the year banged up in one form or another.

Shoulder and ankle injuries have hobbled him over the previous two weeks, forcing him out of the Niners' Week 3 home victory over the Arizona Cardinals where second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall continued to increase his own stock value.

Jennings also didn't practice on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of Week 4's bout against the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars either, which put serious doubts on the availability of sufficient weapons for either quarterback -- Brock Purdy or Mac Jones -- who gets the start on Sunday.

Fortunately, Jennings was spotted in practice on Friday, which is a clear improvement over the previous two days.

But that doesn't directly point to the big-bodied receiver being guaranteed to play against the Jags.

Jauan Jennings, Mac Jones 'questionable' for 49ers vs. Jaguars

In his final pre-Week 4 press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan gave a cautious bit of optimism on Jennings ahead of Sunday's game, declaring the receiver as questionable.

Here's the full injury report for San Francisco:

Questionable

  • WR Jauan Jennings (ankle/shoulder)
  • QB Mac Jones (knee)
  • CB Renardo Green (neck)
  • WR Ricky Pearsall (knee)
  • OL Connor Colby (groin)

Out

  • WR Jordan Watkins (calf)
  • DT C.J. West (thumb)

Shanahan declared Purdy will start over Jones, and the latter's availability is worth monitoring, too, especially with the former returning from his two-game absence that allowed Jones to step up into the limelight, helping deliver the 49ers two victories.

While the thought of having Jones go against his former squad is a nice one, there's little doubting what Shanahan and the Niners would do here if both were fully healthy. It's Purdy's team, no questions asked.

Pearsall's knee issue is slightly concerning, but the receiver told reporters he'd play without issue.

Jennings, meanwhile, appears to be more of a gameday decision, but at least there's good news regarding having a chance to play when the two teams square off on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 4:05 p.m. ET.
