Top lessons learned from 49ers training camp so far

Brandon Aiyuk isn't a distraction

Tight end George Kittle recently told Pro Football Talk's Chris Simms about how no one in the locker room or camp is discussing wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's ongoing drama with the Niners amid his desire to be released.

"I have not seen anybody or heard anybody talk about it," Kittle told Simms.

Deebo is back

With injuries beginning to pile up at wide receiver, San Francisco opted to bring back an old friend, Deebo Samuel, on a one-year deal after he spent 2025 with the Washington Commanders.

While Samuel may not be anything close to his 2021 All-Pro form, he at least gives the 49ers some needed insurance and a boost at the position.

Injury updates

TE George Kittle

Kittle suffered a torn Achilles last January in the playoffs but is hopeful for a Week 1 return. The All-Pro has been placed on the active/physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.

RB Isaac Guerendo

Isaac Guerendo suffered a torn pectoral earlier this offseason and is expected to miss most of camp, and he was placed on the active/PUP list.

DL Alfred Collins

Alfred Collins is expected back sooner than either Kittle or Guerendo but also started off camp on the active/PUP list.

DL Mykel Williams

After suffering a torn ACL last season, Mykel Williams is working his way toward getting back on the field but nevertheless opened camp on the active/PUP list.

DL Gracen Halton

Gracen Halton is dealing with a knee bruise, but it's not yet specified how much time he'll miss.

OT Vederian Lowe

The veteran swing tackle suffered a high-ankle sprain on the opening day of practice and will likely miss some time.

WR Ricky Pearsall

After missing all but nine games last season with various injuries, a nagging PCL injury is carrying over into camp, and Ricky Pearsall is experiencing some swelling that'll ultimately conclude with season-ending surgery.

RB Jordan James

Jordan James, the second-year tailback who was competing to back up Christian McCaffrey, is dealing with fractured ribs and will miss some time.

HC Kyle Shanahan

The coach was involved in a car collision and suffered non-life-threatening injuries but is dealing with a concussion, as shared by Lynch. Shanahan will be present at practices and have some involvement, but the rest of the staff will help manage sessions.

Latest practice updates

According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, quarterback Brock Purdy went 10-of-12 during his practice sessions and showed some budding chemistry with wide receiver Mike Evans.

Connor Colby appears to be getting the first shot at the left guard starting job, while linebacker Nick Martin is currently first in the running for the starting SAM linebacker duty.

Updates from Monday, July 27

Ji'Ayir Brown made headway at safety with a diving interception, while rookie De'Zhaun Stribling flashed his speed during practice. Both are fighting to climb the depth chart, the latter getting a bigger opportunity with Christian Kirk sidelined.

Romello Height suffered a scare and had to be carted off the field, but subsequent reports revealed it was cramps and no injury to report.

Updates from Wednesday, July 29

ESPN's Nick Wagoner shared some troubling updates, including the Pearsall news. Exactly how much time the third-year wideout will miss remains unclear, but it at least allows depth receivers a better chance to secure a roster spot.

Updates from Friday, July 31

Fights!

A small scuffle between Christian McCaffrey and Dre Greenlaw drew some attention, but the big brawl took place when Jake Tonges caught a pass against Fred Warner, which drew Warner's ire and led to a pretty hefty scuffle on the field.

It sounds as if the veterans broke it up.

Updates from Saturday, Aug. 1

Samuel's return to the field was the biggest storyline from Saturday's practice session, according to Wagoner, who also pointed out several injuries and also highlighted it was a rough day for the offense in general.

This week's practice schedule

  • Thursday, Aug. 6: Public practice (1 p.m. ET)

I'll look across the ball and be like, "Oh, shoot. You've got Dre Greenlaw next to Fred again." And they're flying around, and they're filling the gaps. You could feel them. And so, just having him in our locker room, and his presence, is a real thing.

After months of waiting, the San Francisco 49ers are getting back on the field for meaningful action—training camp should provide a realistic glimpse into how general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan's offseason has improved the Niners' chances of getting back into the postseason.

Armed with an older roster core, plus several younger hopefuls looking to make an impact, this year's training camp figures to be a pivotal one that'll not only look to influence San Francisco's current Super Bowl aspirations but will also provide indications for future years.
