The San Francisco 49ers' devastating injury woes have continued this week, as edge rusher Bryce Huff is set to miss time with a hamstring injury suffered in Sunday night's win over the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't give an official timeline for the defender's return, but he told reporters, "Hopefully it won't be longer than two weeks."
With Nick Bosa and Tarron Jackson already sidelined, the Niners were already thin at the position. This hit sends them into full crisis mode.
In the middle of a competitive season, San Francisco may look to add new players to their rotation in the coming weeks. If they do, here are a few top options.
3 replacement options as 49ers lose Bryce Huff to injury
DeMarcus Walker
If the 49ers look for a replacement in the short term, they'll likely be shopping in the bargain bin. Already tight on salary cap room, they may not be able to afford a big trade for a new edge rusher. On the free agent market, there aren't many options better than DeMarcus Walker.
The 31-year-old has played for a few teams during his career, but he spent his last two seasons with the Chicago Bears, starting all 17 games in 2024. He's a solid run defender with enough pass-rushing ability to threaten opposing quarterbacks.
Shaquil Barrett
Shaquil Barrett would be much closer to a one-for-one replacement for Huff. He's a pass rush specialist best known for his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Back in 2019, he recorded 20 sacks and six forced fumbles.
At nearly 33 years old, he's past his days of being a premier pass rusher. But he's shown the desire to play this season, and no team could use his services more than San Francisco. A playoff contender is likely to scoop him up soon, so the 49ers may have to move quick to get Barrett in the building.
Trey Hendrickson
It's certainly a long shot, but you have to mention Trey Hendrickson when discussing edge-needy teams. The disgruntled superstar edge rusher has made his desire to move teams known, even if the Cincinnati Bengals are reluctant to trade him.
The 49ers would have some hoops to jump through to make the deal happen, but it's worth considering. Still, a dip into the free agent market seems much more likely than a major trade.
Hopefully, Huff can get back on the field soon and ease San Francisco's injury concerns.
