No. 4: Ross Dwelley has to be threatened by 49ers drafting Cameron Latu, Brayden Willis

The 2023 NFL Draft was awfully deep at tight end, and it would have been foolish for the 49ers to pass it up despite boasting an All-Pro in George Kittle.

Getting a quality No. 2 tight end behind Kittle, though, has been a bit challenging for head coach Kyle Shanahan over the years, although Ross Dwelley has seemingly found himself always around for that role ever since the 2019 season.

And yet Dwelley also is seemingly on the fringes of the roster year after year, too.

2023 will be no different. The Niners added two more tight ends, one of them being Alabama’s Cameron Latu in Round 3, who’ll immediately challenge Dwelley for a backup spot.

Making things even more interesting, Oklahoma’s Brayden Willis is awfully versatile and can line up anywhere, meaning Dwelley’s limited skill set has to be threatened not just once.

But twice.
