49ers kick off final day of 2023 NFL Draft with 2 stud picks
The San Francisco 49ers began day three of the 2023 NFL draft with two picks in the fifth round. Here we take a look at those players and their fit.
Day two of the 2023 NFL Draft turned out to be very unique for the San Francisco 49ers.
The draft actually began for the 49ers in the third round as they had traded away their first- and second-round picks in acquiring players, namely quarterback Trey Lance and dual-threat running back Christian McCaffrey.
They had three picks in the third round, and many thought at least one would be used to select an offensive lineman. None of those three selections however were used on any linemen, offensive or defensive.
The Niners would trade up in the third round to select safety Ji’Ayir Brown out of Penn State with the 87th overall pick. They swapped pick Nos. 102, 164 and 222 with the Minnesota Vikings in order to move up and take Brown.
At their next pick in the third round, No. 99 overall, San Francisco selected kicker Jake Moody out of Michigan.
In another surprise selection that was not for an offensive lineman, the team looked for their man of the future to replace the veteran Robbie Gould who is now a free agent, and to compete with recently signed Zane Gonzalez.
With their final pick of the third round, No. 101 overall, the 49ers selected tight end Cameron Latu out of Alabama. The team hopes they have finally found their tight end No. 2 with Latu to pair with All-Pro tight end George Kittle.
Going into day three, fans were eagerly awaiting to see which offensive or defensive linemen would be selected with their two picks in the fifth round, as they did not have any fourth-round picks.
Let’s take a look at the two players the 49ers took in the fifth.
