Latest rumor says 49ers won’t trade Trey Lance during draft
By Peter Panacy
While 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has been the subject of trade talks ahead of the NFL Draft, this recent report says no deal is on the table.
Anyone who has paid any attention to an NFL offseason for any substantial length of time can attest to how things can change awfully quickly.
One day, the New York Jets are stalled in talks with the Green Bay Packers for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The next day, it’s a done deal and Rodgers is off to Gang Green.
As far as the San Francisco 49ers are concerned, there has been plenty of smoke that third-year quarterback Trey Lance could be on the move, essentially made a “lame duck” in the wake of 2022 rookie signal-caller Brock Purdy’s rapid ascent from being the final pick of that year’s NFL Draft.
Even with Purdy recovering from offseason elbow surgery, he seems pegged to be the guy under center.
Not Lance, the No. 3 overall selection back in 2021.
Lance has denied knowledge of what’s imminent if anything, and the Niners have been awfully coy about any such discussions, too.
However, with the 2023 NFL Draft just hours away, a deal could potentially go down that might improve San Francisco’s draft position, right?
Well, not so fast, according to one recent report.
Trey Lance trade not likely to happen for 49ers in NFL Draft
Just hours before Round 1 of the draft kicked off, CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reported that there were no deals in place for Lance whatsoever, and she also added that the last 72 hours had no such movement either:
While she did mention the Houston Texans, who are picking at No. 2 overall, the report about head coach DeMeco Ryans’ team not reaching out to San Francisco about Lance is pretty telling.
Granted, things can change awfully quickly over the course of a draft. A quarterback-needy team could easily lose out on a preferred target, thanks to a trade-up or some other unforeseen X-factor.
And that might lead to a phone call with the 49ers about Lance.

For now, though, it appears as if Lance is safely staying on the Niners roster until otherwise determined.
San Francisco’s quarterbacking conundrum will also likely continue, too.
