49ers news: Trey Lance is in the dark regarding trade talk

It doesn’t appear that the 49ers have openly discussed trading Trey Lance with him directly, as he doesn’t have any insight on the matter whatsoever.

During the 2022 offseason, the San Francisco 49ers had direct conversations with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo about trading him. Even Garoppolo said as much during his end-of-year press conference.

Of course, despite having those conversations, the Niners never ended up trading Jimmy G.

In the middle of the 2023 offseason and just days before the NFL Draft, trade talks have centered around fellow quarterback Trey Lance and whether or not he’ll be dealt as a chip to assist San Francisco’s draft commodities.

If the 49ers are actually looking at trading Lance this offseason to fully open up the door for quarterback Brock Purdy (or even recently acquired signal-caller Sam Darnold), they haven’t talked to Lance about it.

Per him, of course.

Trey Lance has ‘no information’ on whether or not 49ers will trade him

Talk about Lance being a trade commodity has heated up in the wake of Purdy’s ascent, and it’s reasonable to assume the Niners could move him during the draft.

Even though Purdy likely won’t be ready by Week 1 of the regular season because of offseason elbow surgery.

Speaking with Mike McFeely of The Forum in Fargo, North Dakota, Lance mentioned he was aware of the trade talk and speculation but wouldn’t be able to go any further.

“I got no comment on that,” Lance said. “I have no information.”

Instead, Lance shifted to what he’s looking forward to this upcoming year after missing all but two starts last season:

"Last year I played the one game in Chicago and then got hurt, so it was kind of over before it even got started. But I am just excited for this year. This offseason, just focusing on getting better. Focusing on getting these guys better in the locker room and just being a great teammate, a great leader."

Unlike Garoppolo the year prior, San Francisco apparently isn’t telling Lance much of anything with regard to a trade, even if it’s not happening.

Or, if the 49ers have talked to Lance about it, he’s being awfully quiet.
