49ers NFL Draft trade No. 4: Trey Lance is on the move to Vikings

OK, here’s the trade you might be wondering about. And, yes, it involves quarterback Trey Lance, who is already the subject of trade speculation leading into the NFL Draft.

We’ve already tossed around the idea of this trade: Lance going back to his home state and playing for the Minnesota Vikings as the heir apparent to the veteran, Kirk Cousins, who’s a free agent next year.

Lance for the Vikings’ Round 1 pick at No. 23 overall would be ideal, yes. But it’s not happening. Minnesota isn’t moving a first-round selection for a quarterback who has played only four starts since being drafted back in 2021, two full years ago.

No, San Francisco would need to throw in a bit more to make that happen. It’d have to involve at least one of this year’s comp picks in Round 3, and the 49ers would also have to sweeten the deal by tossing in a second-round selection in next year’s draft, too.

Sound expensive? Actually, it’s not a bad trade-up when using a player who has barely seen the field the last two years as the prime commodity.
